I can't find the soapstone we want in our area.
Comments (9)Hi! I had the same issue; all I could find locally was green stone and what I wanted was dark black. I couldn't get myself to be okay with the green stuff so I had my slabs shipped to my state from a soapstone specialist (Dorado) and having a local fabricator who does a lot of soapstone fabricate and install. Leaving aside the issue of getting the stone you actually want, which is very important but only you can decide if it is worth the extra $1275, you have the question of having a soapstone expert do your fabrication & install vs the local company. In my relatively inexperienced opinion, I would think it would be worthwhile to have someone who does a lot of soapstone do your install. FWIW, my price was $28 a square foot for the slab material from Dorado Soapstone plus $400 shipping for the slabs; my install cost was $55 a square foot plus something like $125 each for my sink and cooktop cutouts. This is in the same price range per foot as you're talking about at $83 per foot. Compared to many quotes for soapstone I've seen on the board, I think this is a pretty good price. Comments (29)busybme, not kitchen obsessed, but having lived with the kitchen for several years, we knew exactly what we would do when the time came. Didn't think it would be in the budget for another year so we hadn't done any actual planning. We did ask a contractor to come in and give an estimate so we could get an idea about how much we would need. Well, it turns out the price was right (and he would give us additional savings if we could start in 2 weeks). We definitely benefitted from friends who recently did their kitchen. They recommended the armstrong dealer who sold the cabinets at a great price. We really didn't look anywhere else. Also DEFINETELY benefitted from gardenweb photos. We spent hours looking through photos (for backsplash patterns, faucets) once we decided to go ahead with the kitchen. Other than that, there really weren't a lot of decisions to make....See MoreVote: Soapstone or Danby Imperial Marble Countertops
Comments (27)I love the Danby Marble. For over a year now, I have had 2 square samples I use to put my coffee mugs on and I keep in the kitchen to get abuse and they look as good as new to me. I really love this marble so much. When I am ready to redo my kitchen again, this will be a top contender along with a few others....See MoreWe are almost finished with our kitchen remodel and hit a road block!
Comments (14)I would just do a small white subway tile and let the counter tops stand out. I would remove that lowered corner cabinet you have sitting on the counter top, that does not look good and is dating an obviously new kitchen. And then you need to decorate the counter tops including the island (and not with paper towel holders) to help break up all of that white....See MoreAnna (6B/7A in MD)
