Murphy bed and computer alcove or sofabed and closet?
Comments (10)Thanks everyone for your opinions and advice. The ZZZ chest is an interesting alternative, but I think since the mattress folds up, it may not be any more comfortable than a sofabed. Also more complicated to set up and break down than the Murphy bed especially for independent older folks who don't like to ask for help. The newer sofabed mattresses with the air mattress on top seems like an improvement over the old thin hard sofabed mattress, but we have a couple of Aerobeds and they are fine for younger people for a night or two, but for an 85 year old visiting for two weeks or more, I really want a very nice pillowtop mattress. So I guess I will go with the Murphy bed. But we still need to put the computer someplace. We think if we use two 18" file cabinets as the base for a laminate countertop going wall to wall with two 30" wall cabinets above we can make the 60" closet space look like we designed it to be a computer/office alcove and not like a closet with no doors....See MoreAnyone have a Murphy bed?
Comments (27)Our house was built in the 20's. A few years later they closed in the "sleeping porch" and we now have a beautiful round parlor with five 5X7 windows, walnut french doors into the living room and a big closet that holds a "real" Murphy bed, with a tag that says 1915. The bed turns out of the closet so easily, then it folds down. We bought a full size mattress from Sears. I spent 7 weeks on it with a broken ankle. Our old house really only has 2 bedrooms, but this was advertised as a bedroom, too. I prefer to call it the parlor/guest room....See MoreAnyone use a Murphy bed on a daily (nightly) basis?
Comments (9)In a house I once owned, I had a real Murphy bed in what was supposed to be my study -- just in case I had visitors. What ended up happening is that my brother fell ill and we brought him to our home for his final months. It just worked out that having him in the master bedroom was easier because of proximity to a larger bathroom plus I could get a wheelchair around in there, so he ended up in there, and my husband and I ended up on the Murphy bed. I was a bit concerned about this at first, but the darned thing was so comfortable that we slept well and really didn't miss our regular bed. And Oh! The key to successful placement of a Murphy bed is to NOT put furniture immediately where the bed will be when pulled down. I had bookcases built into the walls on either side, a sofa up against the wall on one side -- still plenty of room to walk between the sofa and the bed once it was down -- and it was open on the other side until you got to the door of the room. So as soon as I made the bed in the morning, Poof! The bed disappeared and I had a study again. And I understand they have improved them since then. MacThayer...See MoreMurphy bed with table? Comments (18)If it was a murphy bed I would keep it down and have the room be a guest room the entire time the guests were there. That's why my office is in a nook outside of the guest room. I don't want there to be a reason I would need to use the room when guests were there. But I do think my treadmill will end up going in there. And like you said, cpartist, it seems silly to have a room that is unused 75-90% of the time. This is the bed I'm fawning over https://expandfurniture.com/product/italian-wall-bed-revolving-bookcase/ But then I would need to have a chair in there, too. And we also don't have a closet in that room. I've seen some murphy beds with skinny closet-type things on the side. Ahhhh! I've gone from envisioning this as a guest room to wanting it to be too many things at once. The rest of the house is designed to suit our family so well and I just don't want this room to feel like an afterthought or not be useful. I'm including the design for the house....See Morespiritflower
