Craftsman Bungalow Closet Dilemma

Amanda H

We purchased our first home a couple years ago. It is a Craftsman bungalow in Houston, Texas and is supposedly almost 100 years old. The old closets are a bit challenging as our clothes barely fit in the way the one rod is placed.

The picture below was taken from the real estate posting (this is not our furniture). The closet extends up and to the right, indicated by the blue arrows. It's very hard to reach in to the right and the doorknobs slam into one another.

Any thoughts on how to make this closet more user friendly? Has anyone had any success renovating the same style closet? How do you update while keeping with the style of the house?

If the wall isn't load-bearing, would you recommend extending the opening and doing 3 sliding bypass doors? Bifold?
