please help me...contractor issues

I really need some perspective. I can’t talk with my contractors as they are bullies and get mad if we question anything. So, we have been having to accept really subpar work from their subs (really bad paint job and drywall...see other post). The cabinets have chips and dings that they did, they chipped our granite, they will virtually disappear and our kitchen remodel started in March...and no part of it is completed. We get charged extra for their mistakes (bought wrong can lights for cathedral ceiling, built wrong door fronts, forgot to charge for installing vent, etc.) we have worked hard to be positive and not too picky. Today was really too much.

Our basement flooded (and is still flooding); they sent someone over with a tarp and did not help mitigate water inside or outside the house. When we called the said “nothing we can do about it”

I am also freaking out about the tile. Is this as bad as I think? See pics.

I really need help on this.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, it sounds very frustrating. Did they cause the flooding?

get new contractors and do not settle for incorrect shady work.

I cannot dismiss early stage gummosis by looking at the picture above. I think a local expert should look at the tree. If this appeared on my roses I would say it is the work of a sawfly but on citrus? In the meantime I would isolate the tree if potted, treat the wounds and the soil with copper and if more of it appeared I would cut off the affected canes making sure the wood exposed looks nice and healthy. To investigate further ones needs to look at the state of the foot below the soil so a little digging may be in order. The fungal disease called 'Citrus gummosis' starts at the root and foot but there are also other types of gummosis. Yes, @Fori, that's what I said to my husband about the molding there--he's a bit of a perfectionist!! I was like, you don't need that there! But he can be a little obsessive about some things! I will pull out the range later and look at the space for that pipe. In figure 3 it looks more centered than to the right where we have it. We'll have to see what we can do about it. Better yet, I will just pull it all out and redesign it. No worries. Lots of time during COVID. Thank you for letting me know @JuneKnow. Although, it's such a little space, not much can be redesigned as there are only the two walls! Better yet @JuneKnow, I can just leave the backsplash until it scorches too--then pull it all down and put up something else. No different than pulling it down now. Same money and time. :)

Sounds like you have two problems. Call an HVAC professional about the humidity. Most likely there is something out of whack with that system causing the humidity. Regarding the windows and doors, its not likely at all that they are the cause of the high humidity in the home, however water leaking is certainly not something to overlook either. I'd have a professional take a look at that as well. Not sure how "new" the home is as you referred to it as a "new build", but certainly if you can have these things taken care of under warranty that would be ideal.

Did they or something they remodeled cause the flooding?

I hope you have not paid in full and have a fair amount held back.

Yes, their construction efforts caused the flooding...but in their excuse they say there is nothing they can do because of the rain.

I called the bank (construction loan) and we will not release funds until they finish the kitchen.

How do we move forward? We have a yard full of waste and garbage and a half finished house and a flooding basement. If we stop now, we lose money and have no one to do the project. It seems the entire power differential is in their favor and we have to weigh crappy work vs no work +financial loss. What can we do short of a messy lawsuit. How can we get them to do their job? We are over a barrel.

So sorry kikodog but there is no way to change a shady company into a professional one. To allow them to continue in your home will only continue to cost you more in the long run especially since they are causing damage as they go and racking up extra bills. I would put a freeze on everything. I think you need good legal counsel at this point that can review your options based on your contract. Put all of your concerns in writing and request responses in writing. I so hope you can find the strength not not let “bullies” in your home. I’ve released trades people simply because something about them gave me the willies even though their work and prices were good.

I'm sorry for your experience.

Assuming you have a fixed-price contract, I don't understand why you are paying for the contractor's mistakes and for omissions like hooking up the exhaust hood.

Your architectural plans, specifications, and contract should document the scope of work the contractor is responsible to complete and there should be a quality standard incorporated by reference.

Damage to your home which occurs as a consequence of the remodeling work may be covered either by your homeowner's insurance or their liability insurance. I'd start by calling my insurance agent to check.

I agree with Teddytoo. Sometimes you have to accept a money loss rather than have a much, much bigger money loss. This contractor’s work will not improve. It will only get worse. The exact same thing goes for bullies. They only get worse, not better.

If the bullies yell at you or threaten you in your home call the police. I had to do that one time.
