Perennials Hostas

Hosta nurseries north of Chicago? or even southern WI?

As my garden is pretty stuffed it's harder to find something that I don't already have or is interesting / different. It seems like it's only the hostas that are tolerating all the rain this year. I know many order online but I really like to choose in person. I am a hands-on person. I came back from a favorite nursery 90 miles south of me 2 weeks ago with a stuffed car... but not with hostas. They had wonderful kinds but too similar to what I already have.

I need to focus on small varieties as I am really space challenged now.

I travel through southern WI often too. I go as far north as Appleton. No reason why I can't take hostas into my hotel room, right??? Thanks.

If you get near Stoughton, WI, check out The Flower Factory or check for open house dates at Land of the Giants hosta farm in Milton, WI.

You might try Hornbakers in Princeton, IL http://hornbakergardens.com/ or Woldhuis Farms in Manteno http://woldhuisfarms.com/ Both are retail operations with some interesting things to see though Woldhuis is better known for it's annuals. Happy hunting!

Motria: Last fall, some Chicago person wanted a Maltese Cross plant. Is that you, by any chance? I can bring one. Purple plants: I can bring little seedlings of Tovara Painter's Palette, and I'll get some cuttings of Purple Joe Pye--they should root, if you keep the dirt moist. I'll bring seeds, just in case. I'll bring agastache seedlings, too Linnea: Tomato-wise: I can bring a few seedlings. Unfortunately, no Black Krim, I lost a lot of seedlings when my dad was in the hospital :( Do you still want Siberian Iris? I'm afraid I don't know what color, but I will bring some. Would you like some Goatsbeard cuttings? And, if I could bring you just one foxglove plant (should bloom this year) would that be ok? My Lamb's Ear, started last year, turns out to be...giant mullein! The plants are HUGE, and they are edging the sidewalk! They are crowding out the other plants, as you can imagine.

That's easy for you to say, Melissa. You have a hosta nursery on every corner and get to pick out your own specimens. Those of us in hosta scarce areas like to do that, too. Also, HVX is not the problem it once was. It's no longer the item in the forefront. There are other virus types that seem to be more prevalent and more contagious today. Nematodes are also a problem. Mocc has had several show up with problems and all were from mail order nurseries. You weren't here over the winter, but several of us have asked that people quit giving the HVX lecture every time anyone mentions buying from a supplier other than a mail order nursery. I hope the trip works out for you, Mocc. I wish I had time for a road trip. Mississippi is only 200 miles from me. bk

Honeymoon Acres is a fun place to visit...a bit different than many garden centers. 1) They do not guarantee their trees/shrubs even for a year. 2) Their annuals/accents/veggies are copious in selection, usually super healthy and full, and very reasonably priced. Some people don't go anywhere else for those items, once they've tried them here. 3) They have a fair amount of hostas at an average price, they usually look pretty nice. However, I would not call it a hosta destination. 4)They start marking their stuff down in late June/early July...they drop more % each week until it's all gone.

Thanks. I have a "Brackens Brown" that was planted in Sp 2020 at about 30inches. It produced two spectacular flowers that Spring, one the next year and none in 2022. Some minor leaf drop last year so we will see what happens this winter. I live in Homewood about 13 miles from Lake Michigan. The tree is planted in slight shade facing south west. Mississippi native magnolias grow naturally in shaded woods. Yours has responded well to severe weather considering 2014 and 2019 were among the coldest on record for the Chicago region. . Big leaf and Sweet Bay do well in southeastern Cook County if properly sited but are rarely planted. I have not heard Magnolia grandiflora mentioned in the Chicago area especially about its hardiness. I imagine North Shore communities like Evanston -Lake Forest may have had success. I couild not find it in the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe. Does your tree produce flowers every year or just two flowers per year?

Land of the giants is supposed to be fabulous. I hope to get there this summer...... But......not sure where I would plant any at this point.......

While at convention we had a lot of discussion and a scare about jumping worms which WI now has. So online is my safest bet for now.

All the vendors swore their plants were free of jumping worms. I haven't seen a worm of any kind in the plants I bought, but you can always remove all soil and bake it as a precaution.

I don't have addresses handy, but google Jack Barta and Hosta .Stop. Rose Hill is near Green Bay, not a real hosta place, but a beautiful display garden and a fairly good variety. Uniquely Hostas is somewhere in WI. They bought Jim Schwartz's business so they should have things nobody else does.

Ken, the car was stuffed with ANNUALS! Those go in POTS! :) And hanging baskets (also annuals). Most of my garden beds are devoted to perennials. I still like annuals, though, so that means pots.

I got one flat of perennials but those are quarts and mostly ground covers: trying to find something that will work in a shady pathway area where grass won't grow.

You could make the drive over to Hallson's in Michigan -- if you're in the Chicago area, would be around 3-4 hours, give or take, straight shot down to I-94 to Jackson area.
