Need help with counter top selection
Comments (5)Hi Michelle, Welcome to the Forum and out of lurkerdom, and congratulations on the new house. The colors of your surfaces and their ability to reflect light become very important when there isn't a lot of light. Light horizontal surfaces with darker cabinets generally look lighter than dark horizontals with light cabinets. I'm not getting which color you meant in the cabinet picture. Is it the middle one between the white looking one and the maple looking one? Medium brown with dark cracks? If so this is a nice medium light with just that touch of dark to bring up the color. To help make things look lighter, while having the color depth you want, I'd suggest one of the Crystallines. The Crystalline Pearl would be a great choice. It's not as dramatic as the Shell or Dune, but those are medium browns as are your cabinets, and you probably want more contrast. On the other hand, since your husband likes dark, and so do you, you could choose something dark that you both love and make up for it with really good, energy efficient lighting. Are you going to put in undercabinet lighting? Good luck! JC...See MoreKitchen Counter Top Selections

The counter pitted and scratched and his fabricator found out from Samsung that they had mistakenly cured that lot for 7 days instead of 14 days. I don't remember if he went with another brand for replacement. ColorQuartz has been around a few years. Whether the larger Chinese quartz companies are better than some of the lesser known, I don't know. I'd never buy a totally unheard of Chinese quartz. When I bought my Pentalquartz, I asked the manager about Chinese quartz and he told me that when the owner of Pental Granite decided to sell quartz, he went to China and looked at their process and wouldn't buy it because the curing time and temperature was less than the Breton process and he didn't feel it was as durable. Someone from MSI once posted here and when I asked about the manufacture of their Chinese quartz products, they got very defensive and rude and even had others from the company post rudely. All the profiles were Chinese. It made me wonder what they were trying to hide. So that's my limited experience. Other people have posted that they're happy with their Chinese quartz but sometimes it's in the bathroom or they've only had it a few months....See Moremore counter-top help - laundry room
Comments (19)Formica is a heat resistant, wipe-clean, plastic laminate of paper or fabric with melamine resin. This product was pretty standard in most homes for countertops in years past. Then with the popularity of stone, it was used less and less. You can find samples of formica in any box store near you. The cost is minimal compared to stone, although the look can resemble quartz or granite and does not have the panache stone has....See MoreHelp! I need help with choices for my kitchen! Comments (7)thinkdesignlive Thank you. The floor in the room adjacent to the kitchen is birch wood. I don't have much choice in terms of the floor than to put tiles. The tile will be going in the kitchen, the entrance, the hallway, the kitchen table area and the mudroom. The floor needs to be redone in that our tiles are cracking. The trim all over the home is white. So far I have picked the Olympia Glam series Tortora a neutral, good-for-traffic area tile. ( see picture above ) The wood of the kitchen cabinets is in good shape, but some doors need to be refreshed. The wood in some doors is getting bare due to water damage or lack of varnish in some areas. Luckily, I found someone willing to do a trial in my powder room cabinet to see what it would look like and whether he could refresh the cabinets. I would love to redo a full kitchen however I was quoted $ 70000 just for the cabinets if we still want wood. I agree with you that I am all over the place. I will follow your suggestion and create a new inspiration board. Thank you for this suggestion....See Moreherbflavor
