Northern American holly - Ilex opaca
Comments (2)"Northern" American holly. I have these cold tolerant "northern" hollies (Ilex opaca) growing at my nursery. I also have the most southern American hollies from Florida (actually the "scrub holly" Ilex opaca var. arenicola). Both of these American hollies grow very good in zone 7. Parker L. Comments (4)Just to add to roselee's excellent comments: Holly fern may be the easiest fern to grow in alkaline clay, but it often has the drawback of the crown pushing up above the soil line. If this happens, it's critical that you raise the mulch line correspondingly. Every spring and fall, I apply slow-release organic fertilizer, e.g. Yum Yum Mix, Lady Bug or Medina Growin Green, followed by a top dressing of good compost (I prefer homemade), and finally a thick layer of shredded bark mulch. This ritual seems to maintain soil tilth, which keeps the ferns happy. In the meantime, if you notice the crowns growing taller, it's time to add more mulch....See Moredamaged holly fern
Comments (4)They're pretty tough ferns. Mine have been weed-eated, gone totally prostrate from drought and neglect. They bounce right back as soon as conditions improve (which means keeping the weedeater away from DH and giving them an occasional drink of water, lol). I'd bet they'll come back from the roots with just a little TLC and time....See MoreCan I grow a Japanese holly fern as a houseplant?
