Poll: How long did your renovation take
Comments (14)OK, my sob story might fit in here...we started our total (11 x 5.5) bathroom renovation -- remodel -- moved the toilet, moved the sink, moved the shower drain, build two walls, moved a window, raised the ceiling, etc. -- on August 17. As of today, I have the "bathroom" part of the floor tiled (marble) and grouted and the "shower" part of the floor tiled -- not grouted. It has cost us a FORTUNE (around $32,000) and while the walls are double durocked (anyone else have double durock?), none of them have been tiled. The partition between the shower and the rest of the bath still has to be finished and the lights installed before tiling. My husband and I told our GC that our budget was $25,000 for the job. He is our neighbor and has done work for us in the past. The problem has many layers...He hasn't been working for quite some time because he's been caring for his elderly father. I think he's rusty and unsure of himself. He is also an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist. He'll get maybe 15 tiles laid (is that the right word?) in one day -- then tear two or three of them out the next day because he didn't like the way they dried. Last week, he came to us for more money, and we asked him to sit down with us and give us an idea of exactly what the status of the job is. He told us he think he'll probably put another 80 hours in to complete the job. He is very apologetic that it's taking so long, but he seems convinced that it HAS to take this long. He insists that this was a really tough job and that no one could have done it faster. He is an artist... We fired him -- well, we told him that the bank has been broken. We have no more money to invest in this bathroom (did I mention that this was our ONLY FULL BATH, which means my husband and I have been showering at my brother's house a block away from ours? And we have a daughter who has just started college!). Hmmm...pay for college or finish my bathroom? As you can imagine, I am in tears about this...there are so many other aspects that I haven't mentioned...I wasn't planning to write a book, but maybe I should! So, jbjust (and everyone else), be glad that you're doing it yourselves or that your job is finished. And when you get frustrated and discouraged, think of me -- and say a short prayer, would you, please? thanks :)...See MoreHow long did your build take or is projected to take?
Comments (30)Questioning the 20 months won't seem as appropriate once you start building :) There are soooooooo many variables, the county, inspectors, timing (lining up the crews), shipping, screw-ups, weather, materials, personalities, site (level, sloped, soggy, etc...), things you weren't expecting and decide you don't like, things you hadn't thought about and you want, labor, transportation (I'm very rural and don't know how many times I heard "they're having some trouble with they're truck/s), deliveries, you can probably think of a dozen more things that may or may not go as planned. Unless you have a contract that SPECIFICALLY states a completion date (not, it will take 6 months) there's nothing that says they have to have it done when they 'think' it'll be done. Only way to hold them accountable is to put some delinquency clause in the contract that states if they go beyond a specified date there will be a X% per week penalty (or whatever). I doubt you could get a builder to sign something like that w/out a LOT of padding....See MoreHow long did it take to design your kitchen?
Comments (16)10 months. We bought a used house August 2014. Moved in September 2014 after repainting and reflooring most of it due to extensive dog damage. The kitchen was a dark, dog eaten, poorly functioning space and we knew going in we would redo it. Lived in it for 6 months before starting to plan new configuration. No wall moving or major structural changes. No KD. No architect required. We redid a kitchen but kept perimeter cabs in 2008, so had some idea of how things work and GW. Had a plan that is pretty close to the final product and found a GC we could trust through a mutual friend in May 2015. GC sense of time was disappointing but the goal was completion by thanksgiving and the longer things went the less we could switch horses mid project. First cabinet guy didn't offer what we wanted, but second one hit the mark. Contracts signed end of sept with assurance nov 16 completion. Hahahahahaha. We sure learned that lesson the hard way! As of yesterday, it is basically done except for redoing damaged flooring and final touch up painting. ah. I just retread the question. After 6 months living in it, had a basic design in about a week evenings playing with photoshop. Spent a few hours with the first cabinet guy and realized wasn't a good fit after getting drawings a few weeks after meeting him. Found next guy in August and had the plan after 3 meetings and me spending a few hours between meetings. So - 40 hrs tops to design spread out over a few months. But thought about it a lot which is impossible to calculate....See MoreHow long did your remodel take (and you had no bathroom)
Comments (12)My GC said 4-5 weeks, so my big dog and I moved into a friend's condo with her and her 2 cats. 2 weeks in, they were clearly nowhere close and they provided a schedule showing not done with the bathroom for 8 weeks! My sweet friend said no problem although the animals were driving us both crazy. Then we got to 6 weeks, it was pushed out more, and I said I need to get back in my house. At that point there was a tub with running water, and a toilet within a few days. Several times they had to remove the toilet for tiling or other work, so I used their porta potty outside, then eventually bought this camping toilet to use at night. I showered at the gym. My project included reframing most of the bathroom walls and relocating the fixtures, in conjunction with a kitchen remodel. Much more than simple bathroom remodel. If I did it over, I would have insisted on seeing their schedule before starting work. I think the GC gave me the initial estimate without actually crunching the numbers, and I think they could have done more to prioritize the bathroom completion first (as opposed to the kitchen work, which was lower priority)....See MorePam A
