It's 2010- What would you like to leave behind?
Comments (37)I am quite happy to be leaving 2009 behind! I would like to leave behind the messy garage that has become the catch all for the last 2 1/2 years! I'd like, once and for all, to leave behind the idea of having a project lineup! What would I leave behind?? Stippled/popcorn ceilings!! I really need to learn to sew. We each like and dislike different things. I would love to leave behind the carpet upstairs that my children [ok, mine are two dogs and DH] have destroyed, and the remaining rooms up there that I am repainting. The painting will happen, but no $ for the carpet. Totally agree! Don't worry about the big clock...they have entered design vocabulary as one of the options. Actually it may be better to leave behind the compulsion to renovate. I'm actually with ya on the big clocks and on a personal note, anything with a birds nest or bunny needs to be chopped up into little pieces...again could be because I purchased a home full of birds nests and bunnies LOL Floral anything :) And definately Tuscan anything, anything really, any tuscan thing, except for wine of course :oP And anything in brown and turquoise or brown and pink or pink or turquoise :) And all MCM !!! :op The three above just made me LOL ! I also like the idea of leaving behind the term, "dated." No can do. Just replaced a doorknob that was definitely "dated" (see PO below). In the last house, I replaced every single doorknob because they were "dated" (they still are and that was 18+ years ago). I'm with terriks! I'm very glad to leave 2009 behind. It just wasn't a good year for my family. Decorating wise, I'd love to leave behind the ugly faux striped circus tent looking walls in my kitchen and dining room [kitchen done here, master bath next and last!]. I think [know] this is going to be the year for it! "With Spring coming..." That is the most wonderful thing I've heard all day. Thank you oakley! YES! The only thing I HAVE to add is I'd like to leave behind the PO of this house! It's been 9 years now and I'm still having words with him (figuratively). Bad enough he had it built this way, but he had to go and DIY "improve it", not having the faintest idea what he was doing!...See MoreWhat color would you paint this house?
Comments (36)I don't necessarily agree with your architect about the trim because IMPO the finished product is a package of varying elements not just one color. The white trim may represent cottage to him just as the color your son & husband love represents southwest to you, but if you look at inspiration photos, sort through homes on Realtor.com or even drive around your neighborhoods, you'll see that the color is only one part of the finished package. I think you'd be best served by visiting a Benjamin Moore store with a photo of your house in hand. Look at the colors in person that you and family seem most drawn too, ask the color specialist there what he/she would recommend as a palette for the colors you like, and then get samples. You're never really going to know until you see them up close and personal....See MoreI'm in tears - would you ask them to leave?
Comments (39)Caryscott made some very good points. I have had English speakers and non-English speakers work on my house and I have to say that there have been more problems from the English speaking ones in my case. Knowledge of a language, or lack of, is not the deciding factor in how things come out. Skill, attention to detail and communicating with someone until you understand are all very important. Even if someone can't speak directly to me, there is always someone who is bilingual around and gestures, pictures and drawings help. I have had my words ignored by American born contractors who were told in simple English, often with pix, and yet managed to screw something up anyway. I think it is more about gender tendencies than origin of birth (ducking from the men here, lol). My dh will often not hear something that we, or at least I, clearly discussed. Mistakes will be made. I am just sorry this one has been one that is not easily fixable. I am sure everyone feels awful. I don't think the gc needed to yell at anyone as that solved nothing. Talking clearly to the crew in the first place might have been a better strategy....See MoreShould we paint these beams?
Comments (22)palimpsest- I understand your point about waiting on the floors. However, there are a few reasons why we want to get the flooring done right away. 1) Our plan was/is to have the floors complete before moving everything in....we have a large family with lots of kids and so conveniece is a factor for us. Our official move in date is the 31st. 2) You are right that there are alot of design decisions that are still "up in the air" as far as paint colors, furniture, ect- but I feel the first step before anything else would be to have the floors done....no other decisions would be able to be made with confidence until we have a starting point with the floors. 3) The wall to wall carpeting is hideous in there and really closes off the space (I know it's hard to see from just a few pictures). We will be using the non-fireplace side of the great room as our dining room and so having the carpet in there is not only impractical, but will make the space feel very crowded with dining and living room furniture. Of course, having said all of that, we would certainly still hold off on the flooring if we were completely unsure of what we wanted. The thing is that we DO know we want a wood floor. And my husband thinks the light hickory would look fine throughout. So I was willing to go with that decision (until just recently now I became hesitant)and that is why we have the flooring guy scheduled to come tomorrow to take final measurements and get the wood ordered. So the decision doesn't HAVE to be made tomorrow, it's just that my husband would be greatly annoyed with me putting everything behind schedule because of my last minute hesitations. All I am looking for is confirmation that the hickory will look ok in the space and if so, whether to leave it natural or stain it dark....See Morecalidesign
