A premature update on my antique beds!
Comments (38)Oh my gosh! Thank you all so much!! So glad you love it as much as I do. The minute I saw the beds I never had a doubt that I wanted to restore them. They are the beds of my dreams too! I, too, am retroactively jealous! I didn't even have my own bed until college. Ha! Big family, small house and all that goes with it. Always fun though. Anyway, as for a few questions. Nosoccer, I ended up with the Lilly Pulitzer duvet you see at the end of the bed. While in my dreams I would have done a Porthault print, the budget didn't allow for that. I love the Lilly print and I think it adds the needed color and fun for a little girl's room. I would love these beds in black as well! Maybe one day... Jbrig, the mattresses were custom made by a somewhat local mattress company. I did lots of research and so glad I found them. There is another company truly local to me who hand makes their beds with horsehair and such, but each twin, without boxspring, was over $1k. Definitely out of budget. The company I did find is a family owned company that will custom make any size. They delivered as well (a somewhat hefty delivery fee but we are slightly over an hour away - the owner delivered himself!). They made the boxsprings the height I needed as well. All in all a great experience. I held my breath as he put the components in the beds, as I did all the measuring! But all worked out! kswl, I love white, pink and green too! So classic, springy and fun. As for the gold, while I am happy with how it turned out, it isn't exactly how I envisioned it. I was afraid after seeing it there was too much gold. But I couldn't relay to the carpenter what my vision was, so I let him do what he thought best. Once they were in the room and all done up, I was happy so there you go! pattycakes, my MIL has already claimed the second bed. : ) I did have new side rails made to go to 75" and am very glad I did. The carpenter is going to strip and paint the old side rails as well, so that way we have them all uniform if ever we wanted to use the original rails. And as I made the beds for the first time yesterday, even though the beds are 3" narrower than a standard twin, the standard fitted sheets worked great. I think because the mattress is 10" tall, there is not much to tuck in. Very happy about that! Some things to get done: decide about the rest of the room! First thing is a bedside lamp. I will post separately about that with another picture. I really want sconces but I don't want to have to put anything into the wall in case we play with the placement of the beds. Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate all your input!...See Moreantiques dropping in value according to Antiques Roadshow
Comments (18)FWIW, USA may no longer be in a recession 'on paper', but wages are not increasing, yet costs are & a lot of people in many areas are not enjoying any economic benefit. It always irks me a bit to hear this framed by news reporting as 'people just don't want to buy', when it's often a case of 'can't afford to buy' - as in little to no disposable income for frivolities like collecting. The economic uncertainty today has caused a lot of folks to try to hold on to what $$ they have. I think about the AR items that have dropped vs. those that have risen or remained stable & many seem to represent niche markets - or specific demographics of collectors - & & keep in mind that not all collectors are in the US, tho they may be buying from US auctions/dealers. For instance, I know @ one time there was a large amount of buying going on from China & Asian antiques were fetching astronomical prices. I'm not sure this is still true. & then, of course, there's the foreign money laundering......See MoreUpdating Antiques
Comments (1)First, make sure they’re antique vs old. If antique, any modification will negate/reduce the value as an antique but it’s yours to modify as you please. you can take the rest to a shop that takes items on consignment but you’ll get no more than 50% of its value, as seller gets the other portion. For a fee, some antique dealers offer appraisal services to let you know what you have. Again, knowing what you have thru an appraiser or documented family history s/b first step. would be nice if you had relatives w/whom to share, to keep items in the family....See MoreI have Antique White trim by PP and I need to update my wall color.
Comments (1)Wall color is chosen with all your stuff in mind so post some pics of your spaces for reference please. There are 1000s of colors to choose from I happen to love a soft grayed/ green for a neutral often . From the description of the trim color that color I mentioned could work I think. Maybe Limewash PPG...See MoreAllison0704
