LIghted niche or mirror at end of hallway?
Comments (19)Hi again, Just another idea... what if I put in the mirror and thin wall sconces on each side of mirror or even had the sconces in the mirror? I like the look of light fixtures reflecting on mirrors. We have pot lights down this hall (they are roughed in at present) so no fixtures currently down this hall. Our ceilings are only 8 feet so I did not want too many low hanging down ceiling fixtures, but I could add (instead of the wall scone idea) a single ceiling fixture at the end of the hall if that was better. Later in our build I could decide for sure if I wanted a mirror or a picture at the end of the hall. Either way I would have the wall sconces. My DH said we don't want it to look like a vanity mirror. Is this idea of wall sconces on either side of a mirror worth pursuing or not. Or should I instead changing the last pot light down this hall to a fixture? Or should I consider another source of lighting (i.e. low voltage pot lights, picture light)? TIA Carol BTW, the hall is 3 feet wide, and there is three inches of hall left after the last door in hall which is to laundry. This will not be a frequently used hallway to the laundry as most of the household will use the other laundry entry....See MoreIdeas for decorating a long narrow hallway--pics
Comments (31)Oh my goodness, I came back from work today and was amazed by all your creativity! I see the advantage of having a strong "end" to the hallway. I checked CL and visited some used furniture stores. I found a table and a small chest that may be possible, but I will hold off for a few days because they are larger than the space really permits. mo13 and patty cakes  Ledges may be the way for me to go if I cannot find a piece of furniture to anchor the space. And yes an assortment of smaller mirrors GumbosoupÂI will tidy the books, but they canÂt ALL go away  because there is no other place in the house! Bookends and painting the shelves are a good idea. My sense that is that multiple small round rugs will feel cluttered (because the hall space isnÂt as long as it looks in the first picture.) calicocat1967Âyes, I like this. Do you have its dimensions? Teacats  thanks for the source for mirrors caminnc  This looks beautiful and I see what you mean about making the end wall dramatic. The challenge is that size of furniture really shouldnÂt be much bigger than 30 inches wide by (an average of ) 10 inches deep. I found a rectangular chest (not as pretty as the one you have) that is 32 by 11 1/8th and has an off-white stone top. It is at a second hand store and could be stained ebony and I could change the hardware to be like the one in your pic. I also found a two tiered demi-lune table that is 13 inches deep at its widest. This still feels too big. ideefixe  My leaning at this point is to tidy up the bookcase. elizgonz ÂWhy thank you. My LR improved dramatically after getting suggestions from the kind folk on this forum. In terms of color, most of the rooms that fall off this yellow "spine" of the house are vividly colored: two red, two dark blue, one teal, and one brown. We are not adverse to vivid color, but were trying to have a more neutral core to the house....See MoreEnd of the hallway?
Comments (40)musicgale - That is a very nice picture indeed and we are playing with the design to see what could be done (in terms of storage and making the hallway a more functional space as opposed to a long corridor) by widening it out. We are still unsure if having something as long as it is will post a problem and require a design change but will update shortly on whether embracing it will be an option. We did check into those other floor plans/house designs that were recommended and in fact have fallen into the rabbit hole of even contemplating buying the plans of a ready-made design off the internet lol - who knew you could do that?! At the very least we found ourselves flicking through what seem to be houses of the "rich and famous" trying to source ideas of layouts, etc. Some houses are so large and confusing that one would need a map to get around there! Others have designated quarters for maids and butlers - how nice that would be :-). Ultimately however, we found that while many of these mansion like houses are very nice from the outside we questioned the usability and functionality from a living point of view - at least from our family's perspective. This led us to the conclusion that something a little more unique to our lifestyle/property was the way to go than an off the shelf solution that would require modifications. Doesn't mean we can't borrow a bit of inspiration however! martha - we are indeed homeschooling our 4 kids and plan to use the library for that purpose until they are old enough to do their schoolwork in their room (we tried to make their bedrooms big enough for a desk in each). We are trying to piece together your idea about placing the library on the left of the kitchen but are a little confused by that. Do you mean to switch the location of living room and library or did you mean to say have the library on the right of the kitchen?...See MoreHow to place runner rug in narrow hallway with angled door at end?
Comments (5)Just about any major carpet store can help you by making a custom runner and not too pricey. The cheapie way would be to get 3 short rugs (all the same) and arrange them evenly following hallway path. HD offers a limited variety of runners thru a vendor and perhaps vendor can do custom runner...See MoreGirlmom101
