Hair donations for the War Effort (WWII)

I just happened to come across this article about a woman who, in 1987, was thanked by President Reagan for her 1943 donation of her hair for "meteorological instruments" to the Washington Institute of Technology (whatever that was). Reagan said her hair had been used in a bombsight. The article says it was probably not really used that way, that the crosshairs were etched on glass, not hair-y crosshairs. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/hair-wwii-babnik-norden-bombsight

This rang a bell. My mother had told me that she'd had a friend who had long blonde hair which she donated to the war effort. Mom said it was used for airplane "gunsights" in the place of silk. So it was a similar story.

But the possibility of hair being used in meteorological instruments made sense to me. There is such a thing as a "hair hygrometer." Here's a bit about that, along with instructions on how to make one. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bring-science-home-hair-hygrometer/
