strand bamboo floor 'cupping'-can we sand it out? Xpost
Comments (6)YOu need to figure out the source of your problem, not the bandaid for the symptom. Wood floors usually have gapping in the winter due to the lower humidity. Cupping usually occurs in the summer with the higher humidity. So, your home has some form of humidity issue that is causing this problem. Do you have a whole home humidifier hooked up? What is the home's relative humidty? What does a moisture probe tell you about the humidity of the wood? What about the humidity of the slab? When you say you put down a moisture barrier and then glued down the bamboo, exactly what products did you use and how did you use them? Does your plumbing run in slab in copper and have you looked for leaks? What about laundry, refrigerators, dishwashers, sinks, tubs? Have you checked around these for leaks? You've got a lot of sleuthing ahead of you to fix the problem. Sanding down the cupping only addresses the symptom, and will not at all address what moisture issue your home is having....See MoreBouncy floating bamboo floor
Comments (11)Thanks for the replies. We never experienced the feel of a floating floor installed on an actual flat surface with the padding, so we aren't sure how much different our floor is. It does sound like concrete typically would have low and high spots that could end up giving a feel of "variable give" depending on location on the floor, although maybe no different than a plywood sub floor. We thought a good underlayment / padding would provide additional insulation and give it an overall softer feel over concrete, but didn't expect a feeling of distinct movement. The installer did do some leveling. After the floor had already been partially down we discovered significant movement in what was to be a high traffic area. He then pulled up a number of the 5" planks and used a self leveling compound in that area. In a situation like this, what would be the best way to determine if the install was done correctly? Are there flooring experts out there that can give an objective opinion? I believe both the installer and the flooring business that he works for would stand behind it, but I'd like to know if there is an issue before raising it. If this type of floor is glued directly down do they feel more solid. The manufacturer says it can be glued down. I'm surprised that these planks flex that easily over short distances as they are about 5" wide by 1/2 inch. Any suggestions? Sorry to put you through all the detail. Thanks again....See MoreBamboo flooring - Strand wovem Home Depot
Comments (6)Hello Twix6, I do have some experience with Home Depot and other 'big box' stores. These stores unfortunately get what is considered by most in the industry as 'scraps' which is why the pricing is so competitive. The product may look and feel great but the durability is just not there in the long run. Just like hardwoods there are many different grades of bamboo, and the stuff at the big stores is very low. You are correct that strand woven in general is harder than most hardwoods, if you have some time check out www.shopgrf.com there is an option for you called strand woven rosewood. This is the color and the durability you are looking for. Yes, it can be a little more money, but it will be a much better product in the long run and will last a lifetime if installed and taken care of properly. Comments (2)Bamboo in Florida these days? Choose what you like, but it's been on the way out for years. Harder? Ya, know when I first got into this business I never heard how hard a hardwood floor was. Nobody chose floors that way. Of course back in those days it was red oak and maybe some Maple here and there. My opinion is the internet created the 'hey I need the hardest wood floor." Granted strand is tough, but I wonder how somebody could work with (all the resins used to create it) it if you wanted to change the color down the road or Fido did dig intro it. Some hardwoods work better than others in disguising the inevitable scratches, dings and dents. Some folks can be obsessive. Read some of the chatter here and there. "You can't see it until you get down on your hands and knees..."...See MoreEd
