what to do with odd trim around a door?
Comments (5)That is definitely an odd look. If it was me, I would take off the trim completely and just run the baseboard to the edge of the opening. Unfortunately, I think it will still look a bit odd once you do this because the upper part of the opening is unusual. Have you thought of rounding it off and making an arch? This isn't hard, time-consuming, or expensive to do. I just had two done in a kitchen remodel--both alterations of existing doorways. (By the way, none of my archways--new or old--have trim on them and they look fine.)...See MoreDo I paint this black foam around barn door glass?
Comments (5)Manufacturer (local sales rep and production manager) had not had this question before and attributed it to most of their customers staining the doors vs. painting and saying that the black trim looks good with stained doors. I think they probably do more formal door styles where there would be an additional wood trim around the glass (that would cover the foam) b/c they didn't know what I was talking about at first. I'm going to finish painting the rest of the door so it can cure over Christmas and finally get hung and then work on the foam problem - maybe experimenting with acrylic gesso to help the paint adhere more evenly? Maybe I need someone to help with laminate strips to cover it? Maybe I'll need to add very thin trim inside the window frame? I don't know. It's too much $$ for my budget to get a different door so I'll have to make it work somehow. I'm pretty bummed out about it....See MoreBarn Door without Trim - Help please!
Comments (7)The L shape baseboard is a good solution for the situation. Shame on that installer threatening to just leave. That's wrong. Next time someone in your house threatens to leave, let them & find someone else. Pay installments. Do not pay someone fully until it's done fully. A good Pro respects his clients wants. If the client wants something different sure no problem. More work = more pay. A change will cost more, but if client wants it, a Pro will happily find a solution & appreciate more work with more pay. I would not hire that person ever again. Thankfully, it wasn't a big job & it all worked out. Nice door, btw....See Moresolutions??? trim around wall opening?
Comments (9)Before you commit to casing the openings, keep in mind how it may impact the cabinets on the kitchen side, the aiready installed floors and the already installed wainscoting in the room with the fireplace. And keep in mind that the opening from the kitchen to the butler's pantry will be much more narrow.... because the cabinet placement leaves you no choice other than reducing the width of the opening. Reduction will be approx. 2 x the width of the trim, plus. So, if you use 3-4" wide trim, the opening will end up being around 7-9 inches more narrow. The opening is a nice comfortable width now. Squeezing it down significantly may not be what you want if you envision going thru there with serving trays, etc....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
