I have the same plant and am also having a problem. Not the same as your leaf yellowing, just a failure to thrive sort of situation.

It came up fine but is getting smaller by the day. Basically disappearing

Mine is in too much shade then. I was misinformed about light requirement.

I will move it to a sunnier location.

Thanks for the info and advice! Glad to hear that these plants can sometimes have yellow leaves without dying.

I don't have a spot in the sun for this plant, unless I move it to a pot, and I'm reluctant to have one more pot to water through the hot, dry summer.

@lisanti07028, do you think it'd be safe to leave it in situ for the rest of the season, even if it doesn't look great? I am planning to move a lot of things around at the start of winter so I can make space for it then.

teuth, I grow my thalictrum roche in full, bright shade, if anything it gets only dappled sunlight and probably no direct. It's been in that spot for two years. I'll check it tonight but as far as I know it's doing fine. We've had an excessive amount of rain this year, if anything I was going to attribute your yellowing leaves to that if you've had similar wet conditions. Also, as I recall in the spot I had it previously, it had some yellowing of the lower leaves like yours that I attributed to heat reflecting off surrounding landscape stones. But that yellowing didn't kill the whole plant. My long-winded point is that the upper parts of your roche look perfectly healthy and I'd bet a dollar your plant will be fine if you leave it where it is for the rest of the summer.

56steps, the wasting away of your roche sounds like a different problem to me. Did you check for slugs or snails? Or is there significant root competition from trees or other nearby plants? I checked online and thalictrum are susceptible to slugs. Also, I moved my roche to its current spot because a nearby silver maple tree in its former location was invading with its roots and strangling out the plant.

Just some possible alternative explanations for both of you because thalictrum are consistently rated for part shade and that's where I grow both of mine (I also have a flavum).

Yes, ckerr I do think it may have too much root competition. It really is in a too tight spot.

I will take a picture tomorrow before I move it and will hope for a good outcome.

I've had this plant a while and have yet to find a spot it likes. It's been pretty tempermental overall - probably due to my errors in understanding what it needs. But I've never had it dwindle like this.

The bed is automatically watered by sprinklers twice a week, and the spot pictured is one of the last areas to dry out. So yes, I think "wet conditions" is accurate!

The top of the plant looks fine and it's just about to bloom. Black Stockings is finished blooming now.

I have observed yellow foliage in these larger meadow rue in both sun and shade conditions. It has been my experience that it doesn't affect flower production.
