What’s wrong with my cucumbers?

These are the Burpee bush cucumber. They are in full sun in marginal soil. Suggestions?

Nothing looks wrong with the true leaf, although as you mentioned the soil is not great. It looks like the cotyledons took some mechanical damage (stones, hail, bark chips, rough handling, something similar.) Was that your worry? If so, nothing looks too serious and the plant should be fine as it grows. I would definitely think about improving your soil if you intend to continue gardening in that space.

I'm in San Diego, CA (coastal) so its usually always in the mid-70's. Although last week it did get in "scorching" 80's. Not sure if that's too hot for it. Today its 73 degrees F. Most of the lower leaves are gone because I cut them off as soon as they start to yellow, wilt then die. It started with the lower leaves and have moved up the entire plant. Its a lot more pale yellow now than it was a week ago (when I took the photos). Maybe another sign of root issues? It's in one of the larger clay pots. Maybe 12 gallons? I don't know for sure but I don't think the pot is too small. I have larger plants that are in smaller pots that seem to be thriving. I fertilized again about 2 weeks ago (with one of those slow release fertilizer sticks).

Well the brutal answer is 'It's dead'. As to why it's dead it's impossible to tell from the picture. It could be underwaterd, overwatered, overheated, frozen, attacked by a fungus or a combination of several factors. What is the mix it is in and has that pot got any holes for drainage? What do the roots look like? (It won't hurt it to pull it up - it's past any suffering.) October seems a strange time to be starting cucumbers in Canada so my suggestion, harsh though it might appear, is to give up for now. Do some reading over the winter and start again at a more appropriate time.

What is the difference in the soil mix in the two different beds? Something is making one of them drain better than the other and one of them sure appears to be higher in nutrient levels than the other. After all that rain and flooding I would think all of them could use a good side dressing of some sort of fertilizer. Not only does there appear to be a high percentage of wood chips in the mix that can bind up nitrogen but I would imagine much of the nutrients got washed out of the soil. So a good feeding won't hurt them and should help them. Dave

If you fix the issue with the plant itself, which should be the main focus anyway, you'll fix the problem with the fruit. Good cukes won't grow on a poor plant. Simple as that. And that plant doesn't look well at all. Could be weather related, disease (be sure to check the link agardenstateof_mind gave), and/or could be a problem with the soil. So, how has the weather been? Is the soil draining properly or staying overly wet or too dry? Does your squash that was planted in a different bed have the same soil as the cucumbers? I see some white stuff on the soil in the first pic, did you sprinkle anything? "The picture looks like cross pollination with a squash plant. It may still be good to eat....never know till you try." The cotyledons have some damage but since the true leaves are fine there's no problem. The plant will jettison the cotyledons in due course anyway.

on babes.. always look to the new growth ... and yours looks fine ...

who cares.. what happened.. a week or two back.. to damage the older leaves ...

if they were transplanted... that could cause the stress.. that caused the MINOR damage ...

if they were grown in situ ... who knows.. rain on a very tender babe?? ... cold damage though we are probably past most of that ... btw.. always mention where you are ..
