Plants you used to think 'meh...' whose value you now recognize
Comments (37)In my area, nepeta is ubiquitous. In most places it is used, it gets horrible soil, no care and no supplemental water. And yet most clumps are in full bloom for 5 months+ per year. Is it the plant's fault it is overused? It is so fast-growing, easily transplanted, easily multiplied and so compact and pretty in nursery pots that I am not at all surprised by its popularity. Still, I resisted for as long as I could before adding any to my own garden. I now have 'Joanna Reed' which already almost 4 feet wide by a little over two feet tall after being planted from a tiny mail order division last July. Close up, the flower spikes are much longer, denser and with larger individual florets than either 'Walker's Low' or 'Six Hills Giant', but from a distance the overall garden effect is much the same though the flowers are a bit more on the blue side. It is also supposed to be sterile was given a perfect 5 star rating in the Chicago Botanic Garden nepeta trials. The first flush shows no signs of fading and yet the plant is already producing secondary buds that will ultimately be taller than the primary flush. The plant will probably build up to 4 feet tall or more by summer's end. I also have some Nepeta nuda started from seed which have not yet flowered. They are growing well but are not nearly as vigorous as 'Joanna Reed'. Is nepeta my favorite plant? Not by a long shot. But I have come to love its abundant display of blue-violet flowers and ease of care. Many are also enjoyed by pollinators but most of our insect friends will overlook the nepeta if something more appealing like an allium or calamintha is in bloom nearby....See MoreBeen there? That one trip was enough for me, but this other family goes back every year. Every. Single. Year. Their kids are grown and they're now bringing the grandkids. I don't get it. This is a well-traveled family that has been all over the world. Yet Disney is their go-to. I've taken a break from beach vacations because I'm still able-bodied to do more active vacations. I can relax on a beach for perhaps an afternoon, but that's it. Again, we have friends who do the all-inclusive, swim-up bars, cocktails all day, beach games, etc., and they love it. But it's not for me. There's a Camino de Santiago and a few NatGeo adventures in my future... then, later in life when I'm too tired to do anything, I'll lie on a beach....See MoreEverything but the kitchen sink. Comments (42)Gorgeous cedar, waverly6 ! I can also recommend Odie's Oil, which is made and sold from a little business in Florida - you should be able to find it online. It's a waterproof zero-VOC wood finish - hard to explain, but it's amazingly waterproof and not shiny like many others. I've got it on the kitchen floor and NOTHING soaks in, and I'm not very nice to it. His advertising is beyond cheesy, and he's cagey about what's in it while dissing the competition, which imho is unprofessional, but there you go. It's good stuff! We also got a Waterstone faucet from Rachiele, and it's perfect - I don't know how they do it, but it doesn't splash. It's worth putting together what you fancy using the Rachiele website, and then phoning Dino, as he's extremely knowledgeable (was previously a Certified Kitchen Designer) and very helpful, lots of good ideas to get you the best bang for your buck! My sink is on his website, actually - it's the overhead shot with lots going on - dishes drying, flowers, big pile of onions to make soup, and a bottle of wine ;). I'll try sending you a pm about the fb Aga group. :)...See More'Ghislaine de Feligonde'...
Comments (16)Thank you for sharing your Ghislaine with us, looking so splendid... she reminds me of her parent (IIRC), the once-blooming multiflora, Goldfinch, which I've always loved in photos... And very best wishes to you, too, Marlorena, as you continue to sit out this pandemic... I'm so sorry you all in the UK - and US - are having such a hard time with this virus. I think it's easy in retrospect to point the finger at those who perhaps could have managed the whole thing better, but in truth, there were a number of different narratives going around about it at first (and many conspiracy theories continuing!), making it hard I would imagine for our leaders to understand the seriousness and discern the best approach. Some may simply be unlucky they guessed wrong, while others like Australia may be lucky we guessed right and shut everything down PDQ which nipped it in the bud before it could really take a hold to an overwhelming degree as it has in some other countries and cities. Still, even for the lucky ones, we may find ourselves less protected from future waves due to lack of immunity in the community, if no effective vaccine is forthcoming. Take care, everyone... <3...See MoreK S 7b Little Rock (formerly of Seattle)
