Can a full-size washer & dryer fit in a 55-1/4 inch wide space?

We have an older home (built in 1929) and need to replace our old and inefficient washer and dryer. The problem is that the laundry room is pretty small (55-1/4" wide) and it looks like the vast majority of washers and dryers are 27" wide minimum. I was thinking of getting a compact washer and dryer but when I looked at them, they were really small and wouldn't really meet our needs. Also, I've read that you need 1-inch between the walls & machine, and between the machines themselves, which means we would need a 57" space.

But when I look at some of the laundry rooms on Houzz and elsewhere, it sure seems like the washer and dryer are closer together than 1" in each side. I want to get a front-loading set, so I can put a countertop above it. Thanks for any advice or helpful hints!
