That would be the only solution that I can see or just leave it and close the door when you are using the bedroom.

A pocket door to the master bedroom? That's a no-go.

You could hinge the bedroom door on the right instead of the left. It kind of makes sense: during the day, you will typically go into the bedroom to get something from the closet or to use the bathroom, not to go to the window. But, it doesn't look as nice coming up the stairs because you'd have a view right into the bathroom.

How set-in-place is the design, including the closets? Can 1/4 of the closet move up, putting the bathroom door between it and the other closets? That moves it away from the bedroom door.

I'd change the door swing, too.

Either have it rest against the wall that faces the bed, or against the wall that greets you at the stairs.

Actually we have that in our rental in NY. It's annoying but not as big an issue as it appears now. You'll get used to moving the door how you need it to walk around to the bathroom

Hi... thanks for all the input. I thought about a pocket door, but unfortunately it would not be possible due to the placement of the electrical channels In the wall cavity.

Moving the cupboards would be ideal, but the wall separating the bedroom and bathroom has already been built. I think a change to it, although the best solution, would cost us time and also hefty additional funds.

i Have read quite a few negatives regarding French doors for bedrooms and without anyone suggesting it here I take it to be a big No-no.

Hinging on the opposite side seems to be the only option.... Additionally, placing the bathroom door along the wall instead of the front of the cupboard would add a little room... We wanted the cupboard to run th entire length of the room, to have a “hidden” bathroom door, but maybe due to limited space it is not the best option.

I would switch the swing on the bedroom door. We have a similar setup, and most of the time my door is completely opened against the wall, so walking into the bedroom and turning either direction isn't an issue. Plus, if the door swings towards the bed, leaving it partially open hides an unmade bed :)

Well...reversing the swing of the door would certainly solve the problem. Is that possible?

Yip. The light switch will have to be moved, but I am assuming that this would not be a big problem at this stage. Will have to chat to the contracted electrician regarding how easily this could be done

Or, just move the bathroom door further along into its passageway, forgoing the "hidden door" look that was going to be hidden by the open bedroom door anyway. Hang some art on the wall behind the cupboard. Or, turn that cupboard door to open into the little passageway like a linen cabinet.

If you were planning on a tv or art or bookcases opposite the bed, switching the hinge of the door would block it.

If your first choice would be to move the bathroom door down, I would at least ask about the cost before assuming it would be too costly and take too much time. If that’s not a load bearing wall, I’ve been amazed at how quickly the framers can make changes like that.

Mmmm; cool. Will check in with contractor tomorrow. about changing the cupboard, but think it’s going to be too expensive as they will also have to move the central window to the right.

Will a bi-fold door work to limit the extent to which the door protrudes into the bedroom (even if the swing is changed)? Or is bi-fold a bad idea.

Why does moving the bathroom door mean moving a window? And are you talking about bifolding the bedroom door, or the bathroom door?

Bifolds are meant for closets not entry.... a big NO. I'd change the door swing. Also no to pocket door as main entrance but okay for master bath. Just know you don't have the same privacy.

Not an ideal solution but what about a barn door. It could be mounted inside or outside bedroom. While not perfect it would be better than other options discussed. Just depends on your privacy needs. Since you said you normally leave bedroom door open, could be good solution.

Mmm; there is a window above the toilet and would prefer not to see the toilet as the first thing when walking into the bathroom; which means moving toilet and moving window maybe I’m just full of poo! Hahaha).

OK. Definitely no to barn, pocket and bi-fold for entry door into the bedroom. Would it look strange if you have the door, instead of in line with the outer wall (similar to picture of current bedroom door in line with outer passage wall), but rather place it in line with interior bedroom wall to allow the door to open 180 degrees flush to wall instead of 90 degrees, which means it protrudes into room.

Haha Mark. We were posting at same time. I agree and stated not ideal but none of the other concepts are ideal either. Switching swing means bigger problem than most realize. Not simple.

I actually like having double doors into the Master, but I'm weird, lol.

I didn't suggest it here, because I assumed the door opening couldn't change size, and each double door should be (in my opinion) at least 30" wide, and switches should be placed just beyond the swing of the doors.

How about two slim doors that would open into the bedroom. You could easily squeeze by to use bath.

Pain in the butt to open 2 doors to enter the room.

Two slim doors means that you have to open BOTH every time you enter. PITA, especially with laundry. Horrible idea.

Will chat to the builder regarding moving the bedroom door position slightly more towards the stairs; and also esquire about the additional cost of moving the cupboard door to the center of the room.

You could do outswing, but have it rest 180* against the wall shared with the stairs. I didn't think of that at first (I thought, "Outswing it, so you see the open door when you come up the stairs,"), but since you have something nice planned at the top of the stairs, I wouldn't want to block something pretty.

If you leave the hall door open most of the time anyway, it won't conflict with the bath door.

I think the issue wasn't the clearance for the bathroom door (it would've opened inward in the original plan), but that if the bedroom door stands open most of the time, then it doesn't leave much room to walk between that door standing open and the closets to get to the bathroom door.

Chelle324 hits the nail on the head... That is exactly why I posted; to find a plan to easily walk past the open bedroom door into the bathroom.

Well...if the bedroom door is open most of the time, but it's a problem...is it time to consider removing the door?

Would like some privacy when we have visitors sleeping over.

A large number of alternatives (probably all the possible solutions) have been provided and I need to make a final decision (need to tell the builder what to do on Friday!). Thanks for all the help on this forum; really appreciate all the thought and input!
