Well, because of Cori Ann's photos, and Chris's comments re ADR, I hung in there with MA since 2017! It's now going into 2022 (in 3 days), and my MA will be coming out when I prune. I had MA in a prime spot in the garden, toward the back of the border due to reports of its height. I got 2-3 blooms first year, then some buds that crisped up in a hot day/dry wind day -- then nothing for over a year, then a couple of blooms, then nothing. So I moved it to a shadier part of the yard where it wasn't in a prime spot -- and got maybe 2 buds, but deer got those. So -- not MA's fault that deer got the 2 buds from 2021, and not MA's fault that the buds in 2017 were dried up by the sundowner winds. And, maybe not even MA's fault that it got a poor start. The famous nursery about an hour's drive away that sold me both MA and Dark Desire sold them in 5 gallon pots, but the roots looked more like 1 gallon plants from Heirloom. The Dark Desire died, and I replaced it, and had about the same luck with that one. I gave DD away last month to a neighbor, and will now offer him the MA. I've given MA and DD 5 years to perform, and they haven't. So, as Moses says, life is too short (and garden space too limited) to wait that long. So, bye bye MA. Sigh. p.s. I mis-remembered my dates in above post -- I got MA in late winter of 2017.

Rachel, Since Lady Ashe is essentially a climbing hybrid tea, I think at least 6 hrs. of sunlight is needed to keep the long stemmed, hybrid tea laterals from extending and lengthening further, and consequently arching, bending, and looking droopy. The heat and intense light will be great for Lady Ashe. She grows in such an environment for me. Her flowers do not heat stress at all, just about cast iron. Winter hardy as an oak, too. Visualize this....a climber growing on a standard 4' tall fence with long arching basal canes fastened to it. The highest basal is fastened no higher than the top of the fence. The basal canes of Lady Ashe can be 10'+ long. Rising from these essentially horizontal basal canes emerge long, 2'+, vertical, upright facing hybrid tea type laterals with mostly single blooms 'til fall, after the first spring flush of 3-4 bloom clusters at the lateral ends. This, pretty much, is Lady Ashe in my garden. She extends 5' in each direction from her crown, filling in a 10' section of my property border fence. At her mature age now, 6-7 years old, I think equilibrium has been attained, not much more extending. Growing on a fence, even lower than 4', say 3' high, would be ideal to present Lady Ashe's blooms to their best advantage. Growing on your chimney, I think the blooms will not be seen effectively, A climber whose flowers are presented on short stems, and flowers that nod, often considered a liability, would be an asset growing on a chimney, which essentially a vertical support. You want to be able to see the blooms pointing at you, not pointing upward, above your head, as Lady Ashe's blooms would, towering above, pointing upward. Pink Climbing Don Juan to the rescue! I have never been more impressed with a new rose, next to how Quietness shone from day one for me, than my just finishing her second year, Pink Climbing Don Juan. What a climber! What a rose.....fragrant, practically continual blooming, unlike any other climber I know of, with short stemmed laterals, 8-10", also not bolt upright blooming nothing like Lady Ashe's hybrid tea stems. The blooms face at about 45°, perfect to be viewed from straight ahead or below. Study up on Climbing Pink Don Juan; and give it a try. Chamblee 's Nursery has both of these roses. I think in little time I will not be able to tell which rose is my favorite, Lady Ashe or Climbing Pink Don Juan. BTW...The photo of CPDJ at Chamblee's web site is inaccurate. The color is a rich, saturated pink, not medium/light pink as the photo . HMFR has more accurate bloom color in its photos. Moses

Try writing Pat Henry at Roses Unlimited -- she had MA listed earlier. I do understand your concerns @ this rose. I too tried Summer Romance. Both SR and MA display what I call "Over-ploidy" problems. That's my made-up word for plants that have been bred to be triploids or tetraploids, and sometimes the genes just seem to "lump" together. The slow-to-establish growth pattern seems to be a part of this too. However, your conditions in Texas will be much different than mine -- someone here on Houzz is growing MA in California with outstanding results -- other than having a lot of height (I wish!).
