I wouldn't bother to put anything there after removing the trio of mirrors. I would focus my energies and budget on a rework of the stairs by removing the carpet and painting the wood to match the other white/cream trim. Paint the treads to match your door color or the wrought iron balusters. You could add a runner on them if you like for some color/pattern. Use a table and lamp under the stacked photos (table should be 25% wider than the pictures) and a bench where you have the table and candlesticks.

If you want a update the entry, consider the following:

1. Remove the carpet from the stairs.
2. Carry the hardwood flooring into the entry and remove the blue tile.
   Multiple flooring, like carpet, tile and hardwood chop up the visual of the house and make the rooms seem like Easter Eggs.

There’s certainly a lot going on here. I would do as Deco said and concentrate on the staircase first. Do remove those dated mirrors. The twigs in the corner and the candles too. Try that table under the art. It’s in the wrong place and just looks too busy by the stairs. Your tile is an unusual color and unfortunately your wall color doesn’t do it any favors. If you are keeping the floors you may want to paint the walls in a cooler color; a soft gray/ blue. Add a rug to temper the tile color. I lightened you photos.

Can you take a photo of the table and lamp where the bench is? You mentioned putting a bench where the table currently is. Can you use your existing bench? It looks like there’s a separate foyer area before walking in there. Is that right? I’m on my phone and having hard time seeing it well. Is there space out there for anything on the walls? I like your mirrors and decor just think some things could be moved around. Not sure if I would put any mirrors where your current ones are. Might leave that empty. Maybe try the changes you talked about with moving furniture and repost some photos in better lighting if possible.

Looks like there’s blue in the seat bench and current art. I’d repeat blue in maybe an area rug too to help tie in the floor.

Though I’m not sure what size to suggest. Maybe a set of runners. More photos when you can. :)

I am wondering what you mean by painting wood floor boards cream. I also think the stairs need to have the carpet removed and the table and candle holders do not fit where they are and honestly I would need to see better pic of the whole space .There just seems to be too much going on in the space and the items don’t work together. Could you post a picture of the LR to get some idea of your style, since transitional can be many things. Those vertial mirrors need to go for sure as do the twiggy things on the other side of the door.

I would remove the carpeting from the stairs and replace with a carpet runner.

Thanks for everyone’s input so far. Amazing what a different perspective brings-I hadn’t even considered the carpeted stairs as an issue. Would you take the wood floors to the landing or up to the hall Landing? The floor is a tile designed to look like slate with both gray and brown. I was going to paint the walls “softer tan” from sw which I also have in the living room. The living room has a blue/green color scheme. In looking for a paint color online this was indicated as a good neutral that would go good with warm-cool color schemes. I think we’re all agreed the mirrors must go

Take it all the way up. It will look like you ran out of money otherwise.

HI -- If your going to make a change for the better ..at least make a change to the stairs .... think about filling in that corner with a landing and a step . The corner looks like there is something missing and it looks unfinished and awkward and a landing into the corner would work better and the step would face into the foyer .
