Soil Amendments to Grow Tropicals in Clay Loam

I'm in Zone 10B in Southern California. I would like to plant a border with some tropical plants--possible plants would be ferns, ornamental gingers/ginger lilies, alocasia, shell ginger, variegated flax lilies and other similar plants. My soil is clay loam and it hasn't been well maintained in probably years by the previous owners of our house so the color of the soil is pretty gray and the soil turns muddy and doesn't drain very well when wet. I was planning on adding 4 inches of compost and mixing it into the first 4 to 6 inches of the soil in preparation of planting

and then mulching with organic mulch once planting is done. Is there anything else I can add to clay loam to make it drain better? Would amending the soil in such a way be sufficient for growing tropicals or will I just kill the plants? I plan to add 1-2 inch of compost annually around the plants to continue improving the soil over time.
