Couch size

The sofa is lovely and while a rug will surely help bring some color and contrast into the room, I would not choose a sofa that matched my flooring.

What color would you suggest? Here are 3 colors we looked at? During the day v. Night. Or none of them?

Will you put stools at the island? I think it is going to be a tight fit with the back of the sofa and the island.

For a tight space, it seems like it has quite a bulky aesthetic. The ratio of bulk to sq foot of butt area seems small - shallow seats. If you are going to have seats that shallow, I would go for something that has a more slender look.

No seats on the side island. Down the road we are doing to change that to a waterfall island all white with grey veins.

Its a great looking sectional. And it will just fit in your space. I wonder if you can find one very similar without such a wide arm on the end. I guess someone could kind of perch there for a while but it mostly seems unnecessary. I like the color you chose and think with a lighter area rug just about any of them would work.

We plan on this being our forever home. We liked the couch because the headrest come up and fold back. So when we aren’t using them the fold back to make the couch look smaller. I’d love to hear more of your feedback.

We were also looking at this one in the sectional version and the arm is a tad smaller, but the sectional is 3 inches longer on the side towards the fireplace.

Because of the door placement and the size of the space, I'm not sure how else you could lounge and watch TV over the fireplace and have seating for guests. Is that the plan?

I like your first sectional. A note...I have a Natuzzi leather love seat and would not recommend Natuzzi. The seat cushins sag and get flat in the middle. It is a puffy looking love seat and had it for about 5 years..... I will say the leather has held up so will compliment that.

I would choose a black color for that area. Which side will the 9' width will be at....next to wall oven or other side? I believe that will fit.

Ohh where is that couch from? Yes, the idea is to have the longest side of the couch across from the fireplace and the tv, and the shorter lounge side against the wall with the small windows.

From your sectional details the 116” side will be able to go across from the fireplace unless your measurement is wrong because it says 196”

I have developed a scale drawing from your measurements. A couple of measurements were lacking, but I think I figured it out and am close. Option 1 is utilizing the sectional you like. My templates are a bit bigger than the measurements on your posting of the sectional but only by a couple inches. It shows, IMO, that this will be really tight. You need 3' around furniture but more when adjoining islands in kitchens even without stools.

Option 2 shows a different layout with smaller scale main items. You can access from either side of sofa.

Option 3 - Shows a 80"L x 36"D sofa, a swivel chair so a person could swing to the kitchen and talk with cook. Or swing back for TV (over fireplace?) or conversation area. I put a love seat of 60" long x 36 deep love seat on other side so the two main seating pieces are facing ech other and again one swivel chair. Very comfortable access with this arrangement. I put a sofa table behind the love seat so you could put additional lighting, which the room will need.

Each layout accommodates a 9x12' rug. (dotted line)

Flo Mangan you are so amazing for spending the time to scale these out for me. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

As for some of your questions about missing measurements. So that is the end of the island in the picture/against the back of the couch. We will be making that the end of the waterfall edge of the island. The seating part of the island is facing the kitchen.

The way the couch and island measure out, the end of the couch is the edge of island.

We were planning on putting a tv over the fireplace so I think if we don’t do option 1 then we would do option 3 so at least my husband and I can watch tv comfortable when we don’t have company.

We have recessed lights on a dimmer above so won’t likely need additional lighting other than for esthetics.

We were planning on either doing floating shelves or narrow bookcases in the niches next to the fireplace.

I don’t know if any of that information changes your opinion. I appreciate the feedback especially about the lack of access. That definitely is one of the main concerns. Especially because once we put the shelves in and the coffee table there isn’t much room left for a walkway.

With your floors, (although color on monitors is not to be trusted) I prefer the darker color, especially if it is a taupe look? The floor looks more brown in one light and more gray in another so a taupe would work either way. However, with the dark sofa, you will need a lighter rug. The lighter rug would make a nice brightness to your room.

I like Option 2 as well. As to lighting, perhaps a big arc lamp would add ambient lighting, because cans are OK for general lighting, but are terrible for ambient, softer lighting. Want your face to always look good! lol I really question doing a waterfall on that island. do you mean you would add cabinets and maintain your island surface? I would do backless stools, and not spend the money required for a waterfall set up. You have to replace the whole surface to get the proper joints on the island, so think that one through very well. At least you will be able to select furniture that works in the space and will translate to future homes as well. One more tip on swivel chairs. Avoid the ones with the round black pipe-like base. Either do bases that are attractive, or cover the swivel mechanism.

I’m definitely open to the drama of a darker couch and it would pull in the dark patio doors.

The floors are more grey in person. It’s reside ash.

Wow never thought about that in terms of lighting. I love a beautiful arch light.

Unfortunately, we need he couch to be leather since we have 2 small dogs and a little one on the way.
