Mark, I have not been there in the last 5 years or so...have been meaning to go, but just have not gotten to it. They do have large display gardens, and have always carried a pretty good selection of hostas. The display gardens are all on a hillside, with hostas set in among the native rock outcroppings. There are paths going through that give it a terraced look. I know they were still open last year....a friend stopped in to see them. If you're out this way, I think it's worth the time to stop.

We seem to be seeing a lot of nurseries going out of business, isn't that true? I would think it's expensive especially if you have to keep greenhouses going. I know Lexington Gardens went out of business a few years ago, and you could see it coming for quite a few years. I was told by someone in management that the cost of fuel to run the greenhouse became outrageous. I know the owner was older and started to have health issues too. As a potential customer, I like that you are inclined toward natives and would love an organic direction as well. I travel a distance to make purchases that are in line with those two basic ideas. I drive 50mins to the NEWFS to buy native, mostly organically grown plant material. I drive the same distance to purchase organic vegetable starts in the spring, in years I don't start my own. I travel to Maine and combine a day trip to justify doing it, to purchase popular perennial and annual 'plugs' once a year in early spring, because so many nurseries that are close to me don't offer a plug size and have just about stopped offering the old '6 pack' size. I buy tiny shrubs from Bluestone Perennials because no one local offers that size and it makes it really affordable. I think a lot of people buy from them because of that and their frequent sales and great customer service. I was going to suggest that if you could model your business on one that didn't need heated greenhouses, you might be ahead of the game. Don't know if that is possible. It would certainly cut your costs, but limit what you offer. Anyway, maybe others can offer their own reasons why they shop at one place or another and what they are looking for in a nursery. Love to hear that there are some lazy gardeners out there...i am also fairly lazy...Monday is my big watering day..i water the garden and the pot plants and hanging baskets out the front and a couple of pots out the back. I water the strawberrys every day coz they like to keep moist and the rest of my pots including citrus trees and plumerias i water every 3,4 or 5 days depending if it has been hot days or rainy days. They are all under cover because it spontainously rains so much here that i dont trust that i may leave from work with the weather fine and get home and they have been drentched in rain. Not good. So yeh thats all i do...the patio gets sun in the arv so despite them being under cover they get sun in the arvo and they seem all happy...i dont fertilize or anything...see ...im so lazy...and all my plants seem to be fine ...i did fertilize a cactus i had once and it died :/ so i guess that scared me off...i dono...anyway also someone mentioned leaf burn earlier...my fruit salad when i first got it i put it out in the sun the first day and came home and most of the leaves had gone black in some part :S I was HORRIFIED! I had done the same with my white and yellow when i got it and it was fine? Anyway its all good now. So yeh id definitely recommend giving them filtered sun first n then going out into full sun... I really enjoyed the fact that they described our climate here so well and that I could go through the plant listings and "relate" to and/or find ones that I see growing around here. So many "general" garden enyclopedias list generic plants and cultivars of them that I just don't see planted here or even offered at the local nurseries. They even had a picture of a box turtle in the middle of some hardy geraniums and by golly, I have raised enough of those turtles (found by the creek) when I was little! Spongberg. I like it so much that I made a visit to the Arnold Arboretum before I finished it. I am now reading a related work: The Plants that Shaped our Gardens - by David Stuart. Both of them deal with plant history, geography, and logistics....sort of in the "plant hunter" genre. They are both published by Harvard University Press and easily obtainable. He was the local Washington Post garden writer here in DC so I've been reading his columns since forever. He died several years ago and I still miss him and I've been told the same by many local gardeners. Other favorites: "Gardening for Love" by Elizabeth Lawrence "Washington's Gardens at Mount Vernon" by Mac Griswold "The Medieval Garden" by Sylvia Landsburg. I was so smitten with this book that I paid big buck$$$ for it at the Cluny Museum in Paris, thinking I would never see it again. It is remaindered now and you can get it for about $7 if you look for it. Very useful for plant lists. Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix's series for Random House. It is really useful to see 20 clematis cultivars (or whatever) laid out on one page for photography so that you can make direct comparisons. Also, since the series originates in England, there are a LOT of plants that are very rare for us Americans. "Naturalizing Bulbs" by Rob Proctor. An excellent book and unique when it was published. "Gardening with Groundcovers and Vines" by Allen Lacy. Full of great ideas for layering plantings. I like Lacy's other writings too, but since he spent a lot of time on cultivars, they're beginning to look dated. Eleanor Perenyi's sole book - can't remember the title but it has recently been reissued. A collection of tiny elegant essays on all aspects of gardening. "French Dirt" by Richard Goodman. A vicarious vacation. All are good books, but the one I most often turn to is the Sunset Northeastern Garden Book. I think that many of the people on this forum are new to gardening and will look in on this thread hoping for a guide to good basic information on many aspects of gardening. The Sunset Books cover it all in an easy to navigate format. From annuals to vegetables and everything in between. It not only tells you what is desireable about a specific plant, but also what kinds of problems that plant is susceptible to. It lists detailed information of many species. For instance there are 42 named varieties of magnolia listed giving characteristics of each. Whether you know it as catnip, catmint or nepeta, you will be able to find it. For the novice gardener, this is the perfect book for learning, and for the well seasoned gardener, a quick reference. I would like to see more credit given to Sunset for putting together these invaulable garden books. It seems that the "professional" plant people look down their noses at Sunset. This book is much more than a listing of shade plants. It discusses the different types of shade, solutions to specific shade problems, all types of plants, and more. It's well-organized and has beautiful photos. Really both a reading and reference book. If you garden in the shade, get this book. I also find myself frequently referring to Don Hastings' Month-By-Month Gardening in the South. It inlcudes all types of plants and has info and instructions on all basic gardening activities (planting a tree, pruning a rose, renovating a lawn, etc).
