New dogwood has dry, brown leaves, but only on one side. ???

I planted a dogwood early in the spring, and it was doing fine until a two or three weeks ago. For some reason, the leaves on one side (imagine a fork at the top of the trunk; this only affects the right tine) have since dried up. This seems to have happened in conjunction with the extreme heat we've experienced recently in east TN. I water the tree at least once a day, and so far the left side of the tree has remained green, but I'd like to know what, if anything, I can do to prevent further deterioration and, maybe, rejuvenate the tree as a whole.

Any ideas? Thanks for all information.

Timing would suggest an involvement of the high temperatures, maybe the trunk on the side that went bare got sun burned for instance.

Should I just keep up the daily watering and hope for the best?

This is the tree's second summer. It was planted in the fall of 2004. I will pay closer attention to the moisture in the soil, as this will help no matter what the problem is. But it does seem too early for it to be showing signs of drought stress, considering all of the rain we have had this spring. The soil around the tree is mulched with bark. I have studied pictures of anthracnose and can't determine if that is the problem. Anthracnose exhibits a purple border around the leaf damage. Some of the brown spots on my tree's leaves do have a reddish, perhaps purplish border, when viewed from the underside. But nothing is visible from the top. The closest nursery that I would consider "reputable" is a 50 minute drive away. I will take a sample with me when I am next able to go there, probably in about a week. FWIW, I planted a Korean dogwood at the same time that I planted this afflicted tree. The Korean dogwood is in somewhat better soil, but not far from the Chinese dogwood. It has not experienced this same problem. That is what leads me to believe that I inadvertently planted a variety that is very prone to anthracnose, and I fear that I will ultimately have to destroy this tree.

From what can be seen of the fertile fronds they seem quite healthy. The sterile or nest fronds are just the plants 'home made pots'. I wouldn't worry about them. The plant will produce more when it feels the need. Although I agree that it's a bit unusual for the nest fronds to completely brown off before they start getting covered by new ones. But while the fertile fronds look very healthy I wouldn't worry.

If that's an irrigation pipe I'm looking at, you don't have much room for a pick axe or any other heavy duty digging device. It does look like you've got some rock and clay base between the sidewalk and the sago. Have you tried fertilizing with palm fertilizer that has magnesium and manganese? That would be my first corrective action, if that didn't stop (arrest further yellowing) the yellowing, I'd dig that out (carefully) and amend the soil.

why is the soil cold??? ... they are tropical plants ... they probably dont like that ... its stressed.. probably form you bringing it home .. light levels changing.. perhaps the a/c ... water when a plant needs water.. and if the soil is moist.. then it sounds like it should be ok ... it does need light ... is it near a window??? .. it doesnt look it in the pix ... but maybe you moved it for the pix ... its hard to believe.. that this all happened in one weeks since you bought it.. so im wondering what happened to it before you got it ... which we will never know ... note all the lower scars from old leaves removed.... this is annual and cyclical ... and increased by stress ... so it doesnt bother me all that much that a lower leaf has browned ... just snip it off.. and then when it dries pull whatever is left off the trunk ... but again.. how did it brown in one week??? try not to love it to death.. try to warm the soil a bit.. a sunnier location should help that ... ken

Daily watering is usually too frequent, look at the stems to see if there are in fact any problems with those. In which case they will probably need to be wrapped, in order to prevent additional damage. And use visual inspection and/or carefully poking around in the soil near the base of the tree - including the soil it came in - in order to determine when to water.

What kind of problems am I looking for? I have no idea what I'm doing; I just planted the tree and hoped for the best. Wrapped in what?

it was stressed ... from the moving.. planting.. and the high heat ... there is nothing to look for ...

water properly .. including letting it near drying between water ... shade it if you can ... but that is more for a smaller plant ...

and hope for the best ...

fert is not a response to stress ... dont think about it ...

take a tablespoon or hand trowel. and dig a couple 3 to 6 inch holes.. both in the ball planted.. and in native soil .... and find out about moisture in YOUR soil ... do not water.. until its drying down there ...

in my MI ... hard frost or freeze ... can denude trees.. this time of year ... most trees can recover .. and releaf ...

except for yours being stressed ... from the planting ... but all you can do.. is water properly.. and hope for the best ...

and.. things happen in tree time ... which is counted in years or decades .... so the injury could date way back to planting ...and its just showing now that the heat hit ....

but also... it will recover in tree time... so there is nothing you can do.. to speed that up ... so just try to be patient ... and water properly ... dont rot the roots off ...
