Vulcan changing colors?

My Vulcan hosta seems to be changing colors or creating a sport. I have 3 of these and one is half green. I’ve never had this happen before. Any thoughts as to why it is changing? Can I cut out the green half? Will that stop the color change?

Ignore the ratty leaves. Between rabbits, hail storms, and my neighbor’s river birch dropping branches on it... I can’t win.

The 'Vulcan' at the top is sporting, quite a common thing with members of the Hyacinthina family. 'Vulcan' is out of 'Captain Kirk' which is out of 'Gold Standard' which is out of 'Fortunei Hyacinthina', still with me...

I have green sports out of 'Revolution' which I call 'Green Revolution' and out of 'Risky Business' which I call 'Outta Business' and they sure remind me of what you're seeing happening with that one 'Vulcan'. For garden ID purposes you can call it whatever you want, like 'Green Girl' for example if you wanted to maintain a Star Trek theme...

Well, Sydney, I’m betting you will get different answers here. Last season I had two hosta sport, Stained Glass and Miniskirt. I carefully separated the Miniskirt and repotted both pieces. The sport died in about six weeks and the Miniskirt didn’t bud out this spring, the crown died. Stained Glass got the same treatment. The sport died by September. I just dug and repotted Stained Glass a week ago, it was sooooo small, it actually looks better today. BTW, I have been successful with growing hosta in pots, Miniskirt was growing in a pot and Stained Glass was in my garden.

I know many have done this successfully but I’m not separating any more hosta. If this happens again here the hosta will be compost.

Jan, it's been a really wierd spring here. I thought I had lost Little Red Rooster, Jack of Diamonds and Little Jay because On Stage which is usually the last to come up was up already. Lo and behold all three came back this week ... they may be struggling because of last year's drought and lack of continuous winter snow cover . Also the root competition in my hosta gardens isn't helping. I hope yours is on its way up.

The new leaves (whether in Spring with the flush, or as with yours on the second flush of growth) on many hostas unfurl green, then take on their distinctive colors over time. For some it is just a week or so, and for others it takes a month. I just looked at my Vulcan and all the new growth is just as you described. Yes, they will turn white for you this year. Edit: The green to white is called ALBESCENCE. Enjoy your new Vulcan. It was that crisp white and dark green that made me get that one too. I have a slight preference for the pegmatite granite (the one with the big circles, and to all the geologists on this site, I'm sorry if I'm mangling the name) for two reasons: 1. more color, thus more decorating choices and 2. the fossils might end up being limiting, esp. if a boy decides he hates dinosaurs. (I'm speaking as a mother of boys here. Both of my boys went thru the dino phase, then outgrew them, then rediscovered Jurassic Park and similar. Kids change their minds a lot as they grow. My kid had to have his room painted lime green, then 3 years later he wants to junk everything green and paint it red. Don't ask.) However, FB is so cool that it's only a slight preference the other way.

Van Wade once said (many years ago) that he just twisted off (to remove) the all green eyes rather than cutting them out. No trauma to the original pant. Your choice.

van had plenty of replacements laying around .. lol ...

dig it up ... separate them ... replant good one.. throw away the green one ... unless you insist on keeping it.. then all the power to ya ...

there is a big difference between a 4 foot across crown.. and needing a backhoe to dig it up ... so you twist them off ... as compared to this tiny thing ... of which i just spent more time typing than it would take to pop it out of the ground ... eh???
