Comments (9)Yes, Copperopolis is the name of a town in CA founded in 1860, near a newly discovered copper mining site. It was named because of the copper, and then the Greek word for City. It was a boom mining town during the Civil War. It is still there (pop ~ 3,000), now functioning as a tourist town in the old gold mining area of Northern CA, East of Stockton. There is a famous bar still there which was founded in 1862 - this rose was found near the bar. Many many old mystery roses have been found in the old gold rush area of California - the ones which have survived over 150 years with little or no care make great garden roses in similar climates. "Copperopolis Bar" is a mystery rose (might be a hybrid perpetual) which is not in commerce. However, it is at the Sacramento Cemetery Historic Rose Garden, and has been available for purchase at the once a year rose sale. It is a dark pink, with zillions of petals - gorgeous. Unfortunately, I could not find any info on the size of the bush (it is not even listed on HMF), but many HPs do not get very large, and the growth habit of the ones I have seen is fairly upright. So, garden-nut, you can tell US how big it gets! I would not worry about it still being very small just since last Spring - it is still a tiny baby. During our incredibly rainy winter this year, if it has good drainage it will just be growing roots - not top growth. That will come next Spring and Summer when we dry out and it gets warm and sunny. It might take 2-3 years for your rose to attain its mature size. So, please post pics of it and let us know what it does! Jackie...See MoreMost Fragrant Rose in your Garden??
Comments (59)Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell....See MoreCopperopolis bar
Comments (8)Rosylady -- I hope you do come, and let me sell you a rose. :-) FYI, "Copperopolis Bar" was found in the old mining town of Copperopolis. Near an old saloon. In my changed climate, I am doing better with roses like HPs, and I am strongly tempted by this....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
