Japanese anemone is a beautiful plant - both in flower and foliage. Stays a nice lush mouth of rich, healthy green, and the blooms are simply beautiful. I have "Pamina", a rich rosey-pink, and "Honorine Jobert", the most pristine white you can imagine - spectacular against a clear blue autumn sky. My clumps in sun are more vigorous than the ones in shadier conditions, but either sun or part-shade exposure is fine in this zone. The over-riding requirement is moisture - they will languish in drier soil. If they're happy, they'll fill out quickly, you'll probably have to do some thinning after they get established and get going, but I don't find them too difficult to handle in that regard. They're absolutely worth the effort of yanking up some runners here and here. Also, check the tags and avoid Anemone robustissima - anything with "robust" in its name should clue you in....

The whole group of plants with the common name of Japanese Anemone is rather confusing to me. The majority of them are varieties of Anemone hupehnensis or Anemone x hybrida, the later being crosses made between the other species within this group. These include A vitifolia, A matsudae and A tormentosa in this group. Although given the moniker "Japanese", they probably originated from China. I have a pink double variety, tagged as Anemone x hybrida 'Bowles Pink'. Now, I am beginning to wonder if it was mislabelled, and is really Anemone x hybrida 'Margarete' instead. I have this one growing in different sun exposures. Too much shade produces a weak plant with sparse flowering - which is just nice as it limits it's growth and controls it's tendency to be invasive. The one in full sun tends to have shorter flower stalks. Overall growth appears less robust, but I have noticed that it spreads further and faster. I wonder if this may be partly due to the poorer soil and less consistent watering. It goes through near drought conditions at times, but survives and blooms well. The best clump in our garden receives full afternoon soon - this one has lush leaves, stay as a tight clump and is a heavy bloomer. 'Bowles Pink, or not.......?

If you live in Erzurum or Ankara, placing them in that open but protected area would be fine. If that doorway also faces south, you might want to cover them with a light colored box to keep the pots from getting to warm from the winter sun. In areas of Istanbul, Ismir, Antalya, Sanliurfa, and Zongiuldak, no winter protection would be needed at all except in areas of heavy winter rain (Anatalya, etc). There, pots should be tipped on their side to prevent waterlogging the bulb and placed along a north facing wall or coolest spot available. Keep in mind that liliums like orientals need a cold resting period to produce an abundance of flowers the next season and even allowing the the pots to freeze almost solid won't hurt them. Orientals like sun and a little dappled afternoon shade, although not necessary in the more moderate climates like Istanbul. On the other hand, full sun on a south facing bacony in places like Antalya and Sanliurfa would be too hot and flowers would fade quickly, Always use pots with lots of drain holes and a soil that drains well like sandy loam. Mulch the top of the pots to keep the bulb and roots cool. There are dwarf Orientals about 5 to 7 cm tall on the market now that work well for patios.

@jlcjlr - “decided to try the Fireglow…I’ll be planting one in full sun and one in afternoon shade”. That was back in 2010…13 years ago…curious to know how your Fireglow JM’s are doing now? I’m considering a Fireglow for my property, but I don’t have any mature trees so it would be getting full sun the majority of the day in zone 7A in the mid-Atlantic region. Worried that the leaves would scorch. Also, how is the fall color on them? I’m looking for really bright scarlet red fall color…the kind of red that stops you in your tracks with the sun setting behind it! Thanks…would love to get an update!
