white kitchen cabinets/cherry island/ what countertops?
Comments (8)Well, I do think there is a problem with that pic you linked, jama. The inspiration island and your virtual feel like furniture to me, quite fine. While I always think of function first, in this case, the BB gives me a sense of disconnect. I also wonder about the BB getting used and more rustic looking over time, thus widening the gap in formality. Personally, I don't agree with the decorator about the piece looking odd without wood. I am trying to see his/her point but I just can't. Did this person give you a reason why? If the pronouncement cannot be backed up with some kind of explanation, I tend to move on. You mentioned in the first post that you can't do soap stone because the room is too small. I would not rule that out just yet. Another way to look at the "too-small" issue is to think in terms of avoiding busy-ness. I would consider avoiding the highly speckled granites or things with lots of movement. Unless you love the look, that mid-tone speckled granite on BP's first and last big pics is what I am talking about. (Thanks BP for providing all the illustrations!) If you go for a more serene look, you may be able to pull off a darker color. Using one material for both perimeter and island, you'll have fewer changes and that may also be better in a small space. I have seen very small kitchens done in dark colors that are just smashing. Think jewelbox. I happen to love the dark island with the dark glossy top in one of the pics above. Then, you could do marble on the backsplash. (I would like to see you have your honed marble!) In fact, I would encourage you to go fall in love with some marble backsplash tile and then revisit the countertop decision....See MoreUrgent....Off White vs. White cabinets...
Comments (11)gglks, thanks for the compliment on my kitchen. Just wanted to agree with what others have said and to go with what you like for your kitchen. We get a TON of natural light in our kitchen and I think a pure white would have looked too white, BUT the real deciding factor on the cabinet color was that the place we ordered our cabinets from had a VERY limited selection for colors. I had originally wanted a custom paint job (which would have been an extra $2K so it got nixed)... I wanted a color called Sag Harbor Gray which is medium to dark in tone. My husband wanted White, so the off white was a compromise. When we started our project, I had wanted a more contemporary urban feel than what I ended up with. My husband (who is normally very agreeable and doesn't get too involved in design decisions) wanted a very neutral (safe) look. I was just so thrilled he agreed to the kitchen re-do at all, so I went along with his choice of cabinet color and in the end I am thrilled with the result (but honestly, had we done it my way (the sexy/moody/urban feel), I would have been thrilled too... it just would have been lots of different choices - surely not the granite I chose - I would have gone with suede finish on Antique Brown granite (had it all picked out to go with the custom cab color)). Anyway, I am rambling, but just trying to make the point, that depending on which color you go with will create a different look (and different choices in terms of granite / tile, etc), but if you are like me, you'll be happy either way. btw, the omega color samples on the internet might be off for me. The Pure White looked like baby blue. The color samples I was looking at on the internet when choosing my cabinet color were pretty far off of the actual samples. Do you have an actual physical sample to choose from? ... I carried mine around along with all my other samples (flooring, tile, butcherblock, granite) while I finalized my decisions....See MoreWhite glossy cabinets and white Caesarstone counter
Comments (14)Thanks for the helpful responses. Annkathryn, your kitchen is beautiful. I really like the modern shapes with traditional materials (wood, marble), just what I am going for. Do you know if it is typical for white counters to have very visible seams? Shannonaz, I am not tied to Caesarstone but I can get a fairly good deal on it, and they have a good reputation AFAIK. Also, their Pure White seemed to match my cabinet color the best that I have seen so far, though it is hard to judge with just a sample. I'm getting Belmont 1900 white acrylic cabinets. I also looked at Cambria and Pental. Cambria will cost me more, and Pental's white is almost too bright, bordering on bluish. Pipdog, yet another beautiful room, so bright and clean. I am going with a grayish marble in one of my bathrooms (carrara). Perhaps it is the photo, but compared to the sink, I do notice that the counter appears ever-so-slightly darker than the cabinets, with a touch of a warm tone. Why did you eventually go for the Pure White over Blizzard?...See MoreA question for the 'rebels' who have Super White Dolomite Counter Tops
Comments (25)@drwass I can't answer about why some etches and why some doesn't. It was a comment someone else wrote that stopped me in my tracks. The observation that marble, in all its etching and staining beauty, has been in place for hundreds of years across the world and the imperfections are part of its unique beauty. I thought about that. We have solid bronze hardware and it's a 'living finish'. I love that, knowing that over time, the touch of our hands, the hands of loved ones and friends, new and old, will have left a mark of time, and laughs and dinners and sourdough baking, fall stews, card game suppers....all a testament to LIVING, life, love, laughter, friends and family. I see my gorgeous and stunning super white the same. it may etch or eventually stain but if it does, I'll see it as a mark of how well we lived and loved. The same as those laugh lines and crinkles on my face....See MoreMrs. S
