Frankly anything i plant anywhere near MG's ends up strangled and then the MG's just trail along through the plants all around and through the gardens. So i was constantly pulling them out of Gerber's Hostas and the like. The only place i will have MG's anymore is right on the chain link fences. They don't bother trailing through the grass, because their trailing vines are all well above the grass line. The only problem with them on the fences, is they look like crap in winter or i have to clean up the fencing, one or da tuther.

I do think you have too many for that size pot. Your plants will become root bound and won't stay healthy. You definitely don't need that many plants to cover the area it appears you are interested in covering. The strings you have will be lucky to support one vine each, if they continue to be as healthy as they seem now. Martha

Ironically, until this last year Morning Glories were one of those plants that wouldn't grow at all for me. I'd plant several packages of them one summer, get maybe one vine with a few blooms, then nothing after that. I know, most of you wish you could have such problems! Just last year, I gave it one more try in a partly shaded spot with some Grandpa Ott's dark purple morning glories and some species sweet peas up a 6' black aluminum fence. They seemed moderately happy last year, though very few blooms again, but something is just now coming up around that fence. Too small to tell if it's the morning glory or sweet peas or both (I'm guessing the sweet peas given my history) but they're so far pretty well-behaved. I do know that morning glories will survive and reseed in my zone, since my neighbor had the standard blue morning glories all around her vegetable patch every year. Unfortunately, what survives and grows rampantly here is the nasty white bindweed, which is enough incentive to take it easy on the morning glories until you can tell the difference. As the same neighbor aged, she had bindweed growing everywhere in her large backyard, and it would constantly weave into their grapes on our shared fence (the grapes were most welcome) as well as Virginia Creeper (another unkillable thug). The new neighbors that bought their house have been trying to pull it out all over the yard, and I had to tell them how hard they're going to be working at that over the next few years, but how grateful I was that they were trying. I have visions of a garden newbie putting up trellises to support the white bindweed as an ornamental plant, since the white blooms are pretty persistent all summer and attractive for at least a nanosecond before they start looking like The White Death that Ate Cleveland. I'm in Quebec also. I planted my seeds on May 14th and on May 20th I had sprouts out on two 'Evening Glory Ipomoea'(Moonflower). I'm still waiting to see any sprouts from Heavenly Blue & Blue Star. Before I planted the seeds I soaked them in water for 24 hours. Because the Moonflower seeds were the size of peas & easy to handle I nicked their seed coats with nail clippers prior to soaking. That was the first time I've done that & it wasn't as difficult as I had imagined and I think it really helped. They are the first to sprout even though I've read they can be tricky to grow. I didn't nick the others because they were substantially smaller & I thought soaking would be enough. Maybe I was wrong thinking that since they still show now signs of germination 9 days after planting. I've got my fingers crossed on one hand and the car keys in the other to run to buy more seeds!! So I would say soak your seeds for 24 hours to soften the seed coats and/or scratch or nick their seeds coats to help them to germinate before you plant 'em. All the best!
