Have you ever looked into a jug and seen . . .
Comments (18)Nothing but algae, a mosquito, and some sort of tiny crawly bug in mine. I did note spider webs inside the opening of one container, so I'm not too eager to put my eye up to it and peek in. I'm amazed that the slugs haven't found any of my containers yet... knock of wood. I'm terrified of spiders! I don't shout or anything, but they definitely make my skin crawl and leave me startled for a while. I go out of my way to squish every last threatening-looking one of them or spray them with the jet setting on the hose, especially if they surprise me. Hey, they lay 1000000 babies in those gross sacs and I'm not having primal fear of them for nothing! Last year I got bitten by a recluse type while clearing out bushes (tons of those spiders!)... so a dead spider is one less that can bite me! But, every once in a while I might let one live if it stays peacefully in its spot, eating all the bugs... but I'll keep a constant eye on it to make sure it's still there and not anywhere near me. Knocking down or squishing barn spiders is an absolute must. I HATE walking into their webs when I get the morning paper, and they look scary. Sorry for the rant! I hate spiders!...See Morenastiest rose I have EVER seen.
Comments (73)My Abe Darby has a sweet fruity smell but my soil is alkaline. Glamis castle was very bad smelling indeed and thorny and runty. I wanted Jaques Cartier to grow for me so much but every spring the frosting pink flowers had great big proliferations in each center. It broke my heart. It was not the nastiest rose ever, but it was the most disappointing along with the semi double orange I received instead of Heaven on Earth. Someone said to try patience and see if it would outgrow it, but it never gave me anything but the scrawny orange flowers. Finally, I gave up. Usually my SdLM is looking fine, but in the wet year of 2012, it looked wretched indeed and I wouldn't like to live with it if it was always like that. Same goes for Madame Issac P....See MoreDumbest things you have seen in the woods or on the water!
Comments (9)All mine except the last one come from bass tournaments (surprise, surprise!) LOL-- Back about 3 years ago, we got to a boat ramp to launch for a middle of the summer tournament, and there were a couple of out of staters trying to launch their pleasure boat. This thing was beautiful-- about a 25 foot Maxim cuddycabin- the kind of boat that people get out on the lake with and scream around the lake all day for no reason other than to show off just how rich they are (and these were the kind of people, too). Anyway, they were having a hell of a time trying to back the boat down to the ramp. It took em probably about a dozen tries, and when they finally got the boat sitting at the top of the ramp and lined up to back down, they unhooked the bow cable. The flaw in their planning, as they quickly found out, was that they had a "roller" trailer, so as soon as they began backing down the ramp, the boat came flying off, and landed squarely on the ramp with a thud! I felt bad for the guy, but at the same time, I couldn't stop laughing. It looked like an episode of "The Three Stooges Go Fishing"!! Cringing in fear-- The first year I was in the club I'm in now, we fished a major river up here in Maine called the Androscoggin. It's known to be a great smallmouth fishery, especially during the fall, and this was mid-october. Where we launched, there was a set of rapids about a mile or two upstream. One of the guys in our club knew of a place a few miles above the rapids where there were usually some huge smallmouth hanging out, so he took his $40,000.00 bass boat, and ON PLANE, SHOT THE RAPIDS!! It paid off for him-- he came into the weigh in with only four fish, but the SMALLEST smallmouth was 5 1/2 pounds (the biggest was just under 7 pounds-- the biggest smallmouth I've ever seen in my life). But what I couldn't understand was why he'd risk his boat like that!! This was only a club tournament-- first place was only 75.00!! I could see it in a pro am, or even some of the open tourneys where the prizes could get into 5 figures, but not for this!! Obviously he knew the rapids pretty well, but it still makes me cringe every time I tell the story. Too dumb to walk-- I can't tell you how many people I've gone hunting with only one time, because as soon as we'd get on stand, the very first thing they'd do is LIGHT UP A CIGARETTE!! I mean, why not just hang a neon sign!! I won't go into the time I met up with a friend of mine and a couple of his friends whom I'd never met to go deer hunting, and one of the guys that came with him was carrying an AR-15 with a fully loaded 30 round banana clip. I didn't even take my rifle out of the slip. I just wished my buddy good luck and headed back home....See MoreThe earliest spring I've ever seen--I'm 71.
Comments (4)Here in central Missouri, I picked my first asparagus 3 weeks weeks ago. Since then I have had to pull back the mulch and reapply it between each harvest because we have had a few nights get below freezing which turns any exposed sprouts to mush. Last night I saw a few poking up thru the leaf mulch so I will be picking some tonight. I really like the blanched white asparagus that grows beneath the mulch. I have 50 crowns (25 Purple Passion and 25 Pacific Purple) being shipped to me from Nourse Farms next Monday for a new bed. I have a vacation day scheduled next Friday to plant them. They recommend planting the purple asparagus types with 8" spacing rather that the 12" for the Jersey types. As soon as I get the new Gus planted I will be heading into the woods to hunt for a couple of my favorite spring treats...RAMPS AND MOREL MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!!!...See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
