New Construction (Cookie Cutter Builder) not sure how much we can do?
Comments (15)You could go for broke and spread out the kitchen. In just a few years you're going to have many potential cooks/helpers, so having separate clean-up and cooking zones, and multiple prep areas will provide space for everyone to work. Helpers could be loading or unloading the DW(s), or gathering dishes to set the table, without crossing your work space. Someone could be making lunches while you are cooking breakfast. Even now, you should consider a bigger fridge, or two 30" refrigerators. You'd even have space for a bigger range. Without measurements I don't know if this will fit, or if you have this much latitude with the layout and cabinets....See MoreChild-proof door locks for new construction
Comments (8)I think you can install the type of retractable screens that roll up to one side of the door for a french door (it's two units that come together in the center). This would have the added benefit that you wouldn't have to look through the screen when it's not in use, or fuss with opening the door and the screen when you are just passing through. If the doors open out the screen goes on the inside. If they open in, they go on the outside....See MoreMy custom builder is limiting my product selections
Comments (44)While I empathize with @Terry I agree with @Tim Cleary. We're spending more time educating our clients and ourselves, refining our process, rewriting our contracts to allow for some flexibility while maintaining control. It's more difficult with the growing resources of online shopping which is showing some great advantages along with a huge dark side. I'm seeing new brands created almost daily, some of which seem to have no trail and no way to track warranty. New online resources for products who are merely drop shippers cutting out support of product. Garage doors, fireplaces, stairways, interior doors, etc have typically been more expensive than local vendors once installed. Some of the vendors you've cited are unreliable, unfortunately. Piles of trade contractors & retailers will stalk you once a permit is pulled, promising the "best deals" for roofs, solar, cabinets, etc. A rep in the cabinet station of a big box retailer has instant credibility along with "specials this month" to set the lure. Tile & flooring should be purchased from a reliable local vendor that purchases directly from a manufacturer. Be careful of retailers who carry closeouts and returns as color lots get mixed and warranties voided. Just stopped a client from ordering a bunch of ceiling fans without extensions. ("No these are not universal items we pick up at the hardware store") Stopped another from hiring a cabinet builder for a six figure project who works from their home garage. Do your vetting when choosing a builder and/or your own venders....See MoreNew Construction - Hate Builder’s Design Package
Comments (14)I wouldn't do gray or off-white with the other colors you have, and especially not with that granite. White looks like it would be OK, but to be honest with you, white kitchens have had a very long run in the design world and are beginning to feel dated to some people. It's a volitile topic, because a lot of people will argue white kitchens will always be classic. I'm not even sure blue would work for you given the warm granite tones. If you wanted to wait five years until the current cabinets get some use, you could save up for a total renovation. The kitchen isn't so large that you couldn't just replace everything with factory-finished cabinets of your choice that come with a lifetime finish warranty and not be out more than $20K if you shopped around....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
