It was so hot in those days, and I was so busy that
Comments (16)Thank you, Wildflower and Karyn, I went out last evening and brought the blooms in, and I do in fact have a CG AND a JY. Then I watched the weather forecast for last night. We had our first freeze. So, I brought my new buckets in the kitchen, got my loppers and rose pruners out, and started bringing in brug trunks and limbs. Now my kitchen counters look like several of your greenhouses. Glad that I figured out last week what "above the Y" meant, and now I have above the Y cuttings, as well as 4 foot sections of the trunks in a new white garbage can. I left some trunks and blooming parts on the plants in case the 31 degrees temp does not put the plants into dormancy. Now I feel more a part of the brug experience, a process that only started this past spring. This is such fun. I'm so glad that there are so many delightful people on this forum. It makes life better. Jim...See MoreGood Old Daylily Days (Photos)
Comments (25)Debra, you are such a bad influence. (smile, smile, and ka-ching, ka-ching). I think I can't live without WESTBOURNE GOOD OLD DAYS. It looks like just the kind of happy exuberant plant that I love. But where, oh where, will I put her. Something has to go. YES, that awful May Night Salvia, it's pretty for about one week, then it flops, has ugly brown spikes and smells bad. Eeuuww. Thank you for all the beautiful photos, and I especially like when you re-post about the same plant. Christine...See MoreBlooms over the last few days
Comments (12)mantis- Temporary and Eternal blooms are at the registered size of 5". Some may come in under but mostly likely not. I just love the clump of them and the bloom really holds up well under the heat. I'm only saying about INCENDIARY as to what happens here. I don't know if others are having small blooms and so much splotchiness. I've been checking for thrips but don't see anything and you'd notice bumps. With OPEN DOOR, I've had it 3 seasons so more than enough time to evaluate. FILLED TO OVERFLOWING- can't even get a bloom pic, is another one that will be going. Pitiful plant. Again, not a reflection of the hybridizer, just how plants perform in my garden. Full sun all day, no soaker hoses or garden hose sprays - rain water only. Comments (7)Hi Carolyn, I doubt daylilies will ever be popular with florists because of the one day bloom period. But they do work well in personal arrangements, especially for 2 to 3 days, when they can be cut and arranged immediately. I prefer slender scapes with 5 to 10 buds. As the buds bloom, the flowers pale and shrink in size, so I only count on around three days before discarding the arrangement. I can imagine a big massive scape, maybe 36" high with 7" blooms would be very striking, but kind of a waste if it only bloomed well for three days. Very few daylilies are fragrant, but I have never smelled any that were over powering. All had nice delicate fragrances. One of the Kirchhoff double 'Truffles' is the most fragrant I have ever observed. Ed...See MoreRelated Professionals
