water features in your garden
Comments (12)Recirculating water features without any standing water ("pondless"), sometimes referred to as 'spill fountains', are very popular here and I get many requests to include them in designs. Because there are so many ways to introduce the water - large urns or bowls, drilled rock, carved figures, etc - they are adaptable to nearly any garden setting, any size garden and are extremely easy to integrate into the landscape. They also tend to be some of the least expensive water features you can include, are very simple DIY projects and require minimal maintenance. They provide soothing water sounds, attract birds and butterflies and because there is no standing water, do not attract mosquitoes nor provide a safety risk for small children. For some reason, it is nearly impossible to find good examples of these online. Sunset Magazine has done features on them and includes an excellent example and very detailed yet simple how-to's in their publication "Reinvent Your Garden". Comments (30)Thanks everyone for the nice comments! "Deceptively orderly" - I like the sound of that. Things have changed since those photos were taken. I replaced the Cl. Icebergs with a Lamarque and yanked the Mutabilis and replaced with a sweet olive. The Mutabilis was way too big for the spot, although it was very pretty. The Mon. Tillier is making a comeback after I got a little agressive with the pruning last year. And my poor Heritage...was purchased as a grafted rose, before I knew better. It has a trunk about 3" diameter and the overall shape is not as nice as it once was...wondering if I should wait it out or replace with an own root version? Making time to replace, replant, rethink -- that's what makes it so much fun for me....See MoreTell me about your garden fountain
Comments (6)We have a small fountain that I just love - we put it in last year and it is so pleasant that it has transformed our back porch to our favorite morning spot. There is minimal splashing - we have a nice layer of shredded cypress around the plantings, so there's no mud and the effect is nicely manicured. We clean it about once or twice a season - emptying it with the wet vac and cleaning out the interior tubes. I may try adding a teaspoon of bleach to the water this spring to see if that helps. (we have well water, so no chlorine) I've included a pic of it below. Here is a link that might be useful: Fountain...See Moreschoolhouse_gw
