Here is a link to one manufacturer that is relatively close to you. I've never bought from them and don't know anything about their quality. I'm sure there are others companies in MA that can provide the specs. you need. In my area, I found the local specialty mill work shops to be much higher priced for flooring than small-medium sized regional flooring mills. Long lengths are nice, but there are a few cautions. First, the manufacturer has to have excellent quality control to insure the face widths are uniform over such long boards that tend to bow. A slight amount of bow can be taken out by the nail gun, but non-uniform face widths leave gaps and so quality is very important. Second, lengths over 8 feet may be difficult to get through narrow hallways and door openings. If you add in wide widths to long lengths, you get very heavy planks for one person to easily manage. North Iowa here.. What no one on this thread understands is there are no "green spaces" here. We have Habitat ReStore. We have Menard's or maybe Lowe's or Home Depot. Iowa people help each other all the time. Craig's list has junk. I did a kitchen gut 10+ years ago with Menard's hickory cabinets and laminate counters. No back splash. Existing Vinyl floor. Used my just fine white appliances. My house was built in 1880 so no open concept here. My kitchen is a room. A small room by comparison to almost all kitchens on here. I had a handyman who worked cheap. I had known him for at least 30 years so when I left for work I knew he'd deal with whatever came along. He was gone when I got home and I did clean up. I also did the gutting of the old kitchen; dead mice in the light fixture but he warned me about the potential so I was prepared. Maybe I was very, very lucky but I got a great kitchen for $10,000. I don't know what inflation would do to that price today. Compared to what I started with I now have a palace. You are a long way from final plans and I think you will do just fine. It takes a lot of price comparison shopping to get there. And shopping on eBay and Menard's sales. Don't over look the consignment shops. If you do Menard's cabinets wait until they have the 11% off. If you visit the cabinet people there regularly and tweak your layout, you will find people you really like and who like you and they will tell you when the sales are coming up. You can also make your own laminate counters for cheap. I didn't do that 4 inch backsplash thing and even though I didn't do any other kind of backsplash, I'm glad I didn't add it. Right now I have wallpaper but I'm thinking I might tile some paneling that's cut to fit so that if I get tired of it I can pull it off and put something else there.

I agree with everyone!! I would love to re-stain the wood to a lighter color, but it has already been stained several times, the last time being a very dark color. I don't think it would ever lighten up enough to my liking with another coat of stain. Washing or bleaching is not going to lighten the color, since the wood was stained dark. I love the look of stained wood with the grain and knots showing, so to get that result I think I would either have to replace the cedar or possibly have it sanded. Does anyone know if sanding or sandblasting siding is possible? If I can get it to its original lighter color I can stain it natural or a light color. Paint is an option if I can't afford to have the wood replaced, or have it possibly resurfaced. So thank you everyone for your input. It helped me find my options.

Yah...solid floors are possible but you need VERY narrow planks (3" or narrower) AND you need a whole home humidifier (possibly a dehumidifier as well depending on your location). The whole-home in floor radiant systems can dry out wood flooring VERY quickly. And dry wood shrinks. And shrinks. And if it gets TOO dry, it cracks and splits (aka. "checking"). To avoid these issues, you will need to pipe in humidity. Usually this is done through a traditional HVAC system through the vents....but if you do not HAVE vents, you will have a hard time getting the humidity levels stable throughout the home. Engineered hardwood offers you a greater range of products (which are traditionally thinner) and greater choices of widths, but still require the humidity control. Please find out how you will be able to maintain the humidity levels required for wood. This should be part of your home heating discussions with your contractor.
