Better late than never?
Comments (12)Donn, You could always winter-over your 110 DTM pepper. Peppers are perennial! Because Habanero have a 95-100 DTM these are a popular one to winter over where the season is short. The first season only gave me about 6 peppers on 2 plants. The plants are also a slow growing and were started in January 2007 and were barely 5" tall by May. My Golden Habanero plants turned 3 years old this year! I have have a 2 year old Bolivian Rainbow. You can either cut the plants back to about 6" in fall (they leaf back out in 2-3 weeks)making sure to root prune about as much as you take from the top and pot down to save room indoors or leave as is. If you leave as is be sure to adjust them to less light for a few weeks before bringing them in and they will continue to mature fruit in the house. Beware if you do Habanero they go gangbusters in February and take up a large amount of space horizontally! Hab's growth pattern has branches that grow out more than up. Come mid December you can then decide to cut them back (or not) should you bring them in as is. Last year I got lazy and decided to leave them as is in their 5 gal. containers. I cut them back in mid December, however in February they went crazy and by March those plants that were cut back by 1/2 were 2x as big as before they were cut back! Mind you they were still in their 5 gal. containers and roots were never pruned (eek!)...now they need watering entirely too much right now!! This fall I will pot them down again as I did the first fall before coming indoors...it is WAY easier on my back hauling them back forth from the shower!! Yesterday I just pruned them back a little harder, removing all of their flowers and will plant them out in the garden this time after I take back the roots a little before planting out this weekend. All my peppers (including the new plants) have been outdoors now full time for the last few days/nights. March 5th So just thought I'd share that in case you weren't aware you could winter them over :) Vera...See MoreHello! Better late than never. My Epiphyllum flower pic
Comments (20)Hello and thanks so much everyone! I wish there was this much enthusiasm among the people that can see it for real at my home. I will try my best with all this pain to address all of you:-) Stush: I am not sure. I never expected it that big. It is still in flower today! I am glad it is not one of those that flower for one day and then die. Yes, now my heel is killing me along with the mouth because I can't take Ibuprofen and pain killers make me sick. If I can get a piece for you, I will. Please e-mail me to remind me, ok? Hey Penny: You are so funny. A humming bird would be a great thing to see flying around this flower. I could only wish. Tami: Thank you and you are welcome. I hope you have been well these days. Linda! What's up? Hopefully you are warmer than me these days. What a joke with this weather. I never tried to get rid of my e-mail. If I do, I will teach you. Josh...Yahoo!!! Please let me see those flowers. You know, I totally forgot about getting them out until the day before. Comments (12)Kay- I guess mine (FEAR NOT) recurves the most when it is the hotest but it always recurves. Jean- I have the big flowered STATE FAIR zinnias up in my back garden over the daylily plateau. Then I have those CUT AND COME AGAIN zinnias in the Terraces garden there in back of those daylilies. Those two reds, BETTER LATE THAN NEVER and CAYENNE are blooming again today but I didn't take any pictures. I do have lots of the OT hybreds lilies blooming but while they are in spots were they are seen to be enjoyed, I can't get to them to take pictures. Nate- I plant the zinnias closly, only a few inches. I want them to look full and nothing showing in between. Christine, thanks, I enjoy taking and posting pictures. I don't plant Profusion zinnias mine are the more common older varieties. But I like them in all those mixed colors....See MoreHalloBlondie (zone5a) Ontario, Canada
