Yuk! Black slime coming out of bathroom faucet!
Comments (11)I would call my water supplier if you have municipal water. For a few weeks I was detecting an odor coming from my faucets. I called the water company. Two men came out and took various samples. It turned out that I had very high chlorine content. They also took samples from my taps that had filters and those had much lower levels of chlorine. They explained how that happened, it was very interesting to learn what was going on at the water co. If you have private well water you're probably on your own, but if it's public you should probably call them to see if they'll inspect your water and/or test it. If many more people are having this problem and calling in to them it might tell them something....See More2007 Deer Valley bathrooms have bad/strange odor
Comments (13)I was having the same smell in this rental I moved into last March. Just so happens, in one of the Spring issues of a magazine-a professional plumber had an answer to this problem. He said often the sewer gas will not escape & I did what he suggested-and I still do it 2x a month. NO more odor! In every drain in your home..kitchen, bath, laundry...run hot water in the sinks & tubs for 1 minute. Flush all toilets. (Are you ready for this?) Measure 2 TBS of vegetable oil & dump it down all of the drains & let it set for 5 minutes or so before running water anywhere. I swear-the smell goes away within the hour. It creates (-for lack of a better word) a..skim covering over the drain holes & prevents the gases from coming up from the drain. Cheap way to solve the issue without a plumber. try it-can't hurt....See MoreOdor in Master Bathroom
Comments (25)Thanks maryland irisman. You're on the same trail I'm on. I strongly suspect we're getting a back-draft effect down through the exhaust vent. When I disassembled the exhaust fan housing a couple weeks ago I noticed the "el-cheapo" plastic flapper didn't seem to be closing properly. That's what led me to seal off this exhaust vent. Also, when I went up on the roof to inspect the vents for bird nests, etc., I did notice the odor right at the eave just below where the plumbing vent exits the roof. This plumbing vent is about 2 feet further up the roof from my exhaust vent....so if the lower evening temp could be allowing sewer gas to drop down toward the exhaust vent housing maybe that's where the odor is getting into the house. I am about ready to start unsealing my drains, overflows, etc. Once I am able to determine the exhaust vent is the culprit I will experiment with raising the plumbing vent stack. Thanks for your help, and I'll post the results....See MoreRenovated bathroom in commie condo now smells like sewage vent
Comments (12)Thanks, greg_2015, you explained that better than I would have. Lucija, what you did doesn't hurt and may have helped if the problem was a blockage or just something nasty in the drain (you can also use a plunger to clear out), but the fact that it keeps happening suggests that the trap/venting combination is not working to keep water in the trap and block sewer gas - so probably the main advantage of what you did was just adding water. As a short-term fix and to diagnose, putting regular water in just refills the trap and blocks the sewer gas from coming up - a few large glasses should be enough. Then once you know that, you'll be able to discuss with plumber what needs done. Maybe a better trap, maybe it's only caused by your own toilet flush suctioning water out (and some 'local' solution might be possible), or maybe it's an issue through the whole building. It couldn't hurt to ask your neighbours (especially above and below you because it's probably the same vent) if they have this problem too. Or maybe they know a better plumber. )) I have a shower that has a similar issue and it's obvious that running the shower for a few seconds after flushing the toilet stops the sewer gas issue - the toilet flush suctions water out of the trap. Will get the plumber on a better solution sometime soon....See MoreBri Bosh
