Long but need help ... what paint ... matte, eggshell, satin ...
Comments (4)We are just finishing up our new construction~ I am NOT a painter but I wanted to share our recent experience with you. (Maybe some of the painting professionals out there will have a better explanation for what we just went through.) I ALWAYS use Ben Moore paint- usually either the Regal wall satin in a FLAT finish, or the Regal Matte finish. The painter for our home was not thrilled about using the regal matte because he insisited that is was difficult to work with. I have never found this to be true when I painted with it so I insisted they use it because it is so durable. For cost reasons they decided to use the Ben Moore super spec (sort of the builders grade paint) as the first coat and then planned to use the Regal Matte for the second coat. I believe this is why our paint job was AWFUL! When they "completed" the job I could see every single roller mark they made. They insisted that this was a problem they always have with Regal Matte- I insisted they were doing something wrong. The local Ben Moore showroom owner came out to the house to evaluate the problem. He felt the problem more than likely came from using two different versions of the paint. He suggested that new/ primed walls need to have two coats of the same paint applied to them in order to look finished. He also cautioned that reds are often difficult colors for color variation (we have several reds and rust colors throughout the house, as well as black and deep golds...) I have always been very happy with Ben Moore paints and will continue to use them- I find that the Regal wall satin (in flat) has always been very washable- but the Regal Matte paint was amazing in my laundry room- it never even GOT dirty! I have been told there is ceramic in the paint that repels the dirt- Whatever the reason- it was amazing. I would be interested to hear what some of the professionals on this forum think about our paint issue... Good luck- it sure is exciting when the paint goes on the walls!...See MoreHelp plan this space! Need help with initial layout. (long)
Comments (5)With your eat-in kitchen and the window ledge seat (for when you have company) I would reconfigure the island without seating. Make it double deep for storage/oven/prepsink and maybe make it 4' x 5 1/2' size. Get some cardboard and mock up different sizes and locations and see what works for you. Keep aisle widths in mind at all times. The fridge - I have a 36" counter depth fridge which I really like but my kids are almost gone. With a young and maybe growing family I would be tempted to use a normal depth fridge (with french doors - saves on crowding the aisles) and use the place where fridge drawers would have gone as storage for kitchen stuff. That's just my opinion on that. You and your wife know the look you want and how full your fridge is now etc. The counter depth fridges definitely hold less. Are you going to extend your counter run and upper cabinets to be closer to the larger window? If you downsized your sink to a 33" single bowl (with a prep sink in the island) and then extended your cabinet run by 9" you would gain 12" of counter and cabinets. If you think about extending that cabinet run don't go out too far towards the window because you don;t want to create a pinch point between corner of the counter and your table. Your point #6 - I think it would depend on whether or not that corner is going to be become a focal point. I would, aesthetically, like to see the cabinets squared off because I think it would feel more spacious, and if you do a tile backsplash you could run the tile right up to the top. Hopefully this gives you something to start with. Happy planning!...See MoreWall Call - Help me with accessories for long LR sofa wall
Comments (20)Jan, I'm in the same boat as you are. Out in the country on a dirt road, about 30 minutes from a large city, but thankfully there are other small towns 10 miles this way and that way which have some antique stores. I do a lot of shopping on Ebay and other websites. I found the rabbit in an antique store ten miles thataway. :) Luckily these little antique stores (cheaper since they're not in the City) have facebook pages and post pictures of new items all the time. That's how I found the rabbits! I emailed them and they put it away for me until I got there. Roosters are a big part of FC, especially in the kitchen. Which you already know because of that chair I'm going to steal when you're asleep. lol I have a large Rooster figurine on the counter which was a good price at Amazon. And a rooster print on the DR wall. The area is large enough so it's not overkill. The plates are by Warren Kimble, which I got on Ebay. Look up his "farm animals" series. They're pricey if you buy new. Here's a picture of the cow. Do you notice the checks? Another part of FC decorating. (I have a few black and white check things in the kitchen. Black goes with everything!) The opposite plate has two roosters, also with checks, and the sheep is alone in another area. I thought they were together but I was wrong. Natal turned me onto Warren Kimble. Wish she'd come back!...See MoreLong, but need help with bathroom quote (xpost)
