Need help with dining table size and shape

My Dining space is 10x9/6. there is a door on one side that open outward to the patio, opposite is just a wall. The kitchen area is open and next to The dining area as well. The table im look at has these dimensions 60"w x 36"d x 30"h. Is this too big a table this space or will it work? the chairs that i have are not Bulky.

It might be borderline tight on the long ends. Rule of thumb I've heard is 3 feet on each side. If you have 10 feet and the table is five feet, you only have 2.5 feet on each side. I haven't done the geometry, but could round work since you have a evenly dimensioned room.

It sounds as though your table will fit, but as I'm not clear on which wall is where, let me suggest that you measure carefully. If your chairs, as you say, are not bulky, then you'll need 30" of space between the table and the wall where there is no real traffic pattern, allowing someone to squeeze in and out behind a chair where someone is seated during dinner. But if there is major traffic between the table and the wall, 36" will be required, with the chair pushed part way in with someone seated on the chair. Try these measurements and see if you can navigate around

the table with the chairs in use by friends or family at dinner.

geokid, I forgot about Young House Love's kitchen...I've seen theirs before. It looks great. I'm afraid their kitchen is bigger than mine though. wendyb, your space looks wonderful. In the pictures it doesn't look cramped at all to me. You might have more room widthwise and less room lengthwise than I do. I can see how traffic patterns could be a challenge. If we go with a rectangular table I'll probably run it lengthwise in our space. I looked around the web for a while yesterday and I came up with this photo which looks like similar space and layout to what I have. This has a round table, but I'm not sure what size it is (I think I'd be looking for somewhere in the 44-48" range). It has both chairs and barstools: I also found this one which has chairs similar to what I've ordered. Mine are the armless version though and mine have wood legs not chrome. Also, this space is quite a bit larger than mine. I definitely like the chairs with this style of table:

If you have a rectangular table you can choose different shapes although I think its nicer to choose a rectangular. For a round table I recommend a round chandelier. A good design rule is to leave 3 ft all the way around the table for circulation and chair space. That would make your largest allowable table size to be 5ft x 6ft.

I’d lay out some paper on the floor the size of the table and add the chairs to get a feel for how it would look.
