Comments (4)Well, since you have given us a piece, let's talk about those pieces. Grass: Hakenchloa. There's a variegated northern sea oats I just ran across which would do well with minimal sun. Yeah. Evergreens. there's a bunch. Hinkois are on that list, but in general, I'd stay away from junipers. There's a caveat here, but in general, junipers would be more sun as opposed to less. Stones, boulders? Yep. rock borders? Yep. Inspirational design? What are you trying to accomplish? Curb appeal? Foundation planting?...See MoreNeed landscaping advice for our new home
Comments (3)Do you plan to stay in this home for many years? If so, my advice to you is to start with the big stuff. A tree can take decades to fully mature, so it's best to think about them first and worry about the smaller stuff later. Nothing gives a yard appeal and character like beautiful mature trees in my opinion. You certainly have room to add some smaller trees if you wish. I would think about understory trees such as dogwood or japanese maple for the shady area and various conifers for the sunny slope. Your flower beds don't look overgrown to me. They may need some weeding, but there's a lot of nice stuff there. Take the time to figure out what you've already got before adding stuff. The really tall plants in the round bed look goofy, though. I'd find a place at the back of a bed to move those, assuming they aren't weeds....See MoreOld house: need front yard landscaping advice
Comments (45)Lord knows I love Hicks yew, but it grows 3-4 ft. spread and 8-12 feet high. I would not put one of those next to my house. You can prune them into a hedge, but pruning is not everyone's forte. Looks like Novice has some kind of yews already up against the house. That's why it is very difficult to advise someone on plant choices, because everyone is different in terms of taste, desire to do maintenance, family, pets, time, etc. Your landscaping really isn't that bad. It just needs to be maintained and pruned for the most part. I'd focus on the area around the front steps, and just edit the edge islands, there seems to be weedy plants in those areas and the mature trees and shrubs could be pruned a bit to make them look more aesthetic....See Moresally VW
