Hon, there is nothing industrial, or rustic, and nothing farmhouse about cherry and granite. Anyone who tells you otherwise is dreaming.

"Ideally" you want a different kitchen. But does that "ideal" even sit well within your home? We have no clue, but my bet is maybe not.

Your posted question, ( and you began another thread) is too lacking in information. The first of that is more pictures of the entire area , including any adjacent and open rooms.Post some inspiration pictures of your dream kitchen as well.

I don’t know that I see navy working with the current granite, and not sure it’s the best compliment to your cabinets, but I think a creamy white could work nicely. You already have a backsplash, the 4” piece of granite that rises up the back of the counter is a backsplash; unless you’re taking that out, I wouldn’t add tile above it - it doesn’t look great when that is done. I hate to say get rid of thousands of dollars worth of stone, but I don’t think the current granite is the best choice for your beautiful cabinets, I would replace that first, then worry about backsplash. Whatever you choose to do, I don't see anything industrial or rustic about this kitchen since you have cherry cabinets with a very traditional profile. You'd have to start over if that's the look you want to achieve, and only then if you really want to go that route/spend all that money and it fits with the style of the whole home, and my guess is it doesn't.

What are your thoughts on painting the kitchen cabinets? They seem to be in nice condition

change to pewter hardware if you want a little more rugged look. I'd paint the yellow wall color in backsplash area...Just more whitish. I'd probably stay with cherry for the island...that's a standard medium stain color for sourcing drawer cabinets...put some big cup pulls or whatever on drawers and a light maple butcher block top. I don't see any problem with what you have.....why everything has to be changed from what it intentionally is becomes a meaningless exercise.....it's a perfectly fine cherry kitchen....you even have some drawers, and with island can get more drawers !

Thank you all for the advice. We are definitely going to keep the color of the cabinets. We are so planning to remove the 4" backsplash and replace with white tile. Having paint there just gets splattered and messy. Mainly I"m thinking of how we can lighten up the space. Here are some examples of looks I like- some with white islands, some with green or dark. Most pictures have light counters, which is why I am considering changing the countertops. We could potentially just have a different type of counter on the island, but I don't want it to look mismatched or disorganized compared to the perimeter granite and I don't want to use the granite we have on an island because I think it is too dark.

What are your floors? Please? The more complete picture you paint, the better the advice that will come back to you. Nothing lives in isolation: )

Our floors are wood as well- which is why I am wary of a wood countertop on the island. We do know we have to add electricity and are set for that. I don't know why the original picture cropped, but here is the full one.

One suggestion if you do keep the current countertops. A simple subway tile in the lightest color in the granite would work best for the backsplash. You have pattern in the granite and grain in the cabinets. I wouldn't add more in a backsplash.

Maybe a charcoal black or cream color for the island.

Okay For whatever reason, you're afraid to stand back and get a shot of the entire kitchen from several angles. Thus all advice is based on what we can see. Not much : )

Cherry is quite red, so I'd avoid a navy island. White will shout against the cherry cabinetry too. We can't SEE the island. That would make me say a warm gray could look pretty, a deep green could. What is the style in your family room. What are the colors? I'm sure there is an adjacency.

I'd change the tops, do a quartz, even a quartzite such as Taj Mahal could be pretty. But you want to consider ALL these elements together. Lights, counter, tops, etc. I would keep ALL the tops the same, island and perimeter to whatever you select. A color on island cabinetry change is more than enough.

To say the least, before ANY change, make certain the layout is one you like. That includes appliances, and their placement. The island size and ITS placement. ......never throw money at the wrong change : )

Spend money on lighting. STOP. Don’t spend any more on anything else until you have the space properly lit and can actually SEE the kitchen.

I like a slate blue better than navy with cherry. Something like BM Polaris Blue, or Santorini Blue if you want something a bit lighter. Ooh, and stainless steel counters.

I would definitely recommend better lighting, which has to include under cabinet lighting. Currently, wood cabinets and blues and greens are gaining ground over the whites and grays. I think your cabinets can work quite well with that emerging trend. Look at Alabaster or Useful Gray if you want to pull a color out of the counter to pull it together. If you change the counter to cleaner brighter white tones, then Hunt Club or Regatta might work. You won’t really be able to tell until you add more light.

Jan Moyer- totally agree. Thank you for your advice! We don't have the island yet- its something we're putting in an after going through several plans with architect. It will be a 3'6" x 7' island facing the oven. There is 5' clearance between oven and island, 4' to the sink, and 5' to the door. The coat situation is going into a mudroom we're adding on. I've added a bigger picture of the kitchen- (don't mind the stuffed snake)

right now we use a counter height kitchen table. The layout of the existing kitchen works, but we to add an island in the middle as a more permanent workspace closer to the perimeter. We are thinking of adding a second undercounter oven there too. We realize we have to put in electricity, new lighting, etc...

I would also consider removing the over the range microwave. I personally am too short to safely use one.

I refreshed with new counters, backsplash, apron front sink and under cabinet lighting - I am very happy with the result. I also have an L shaped kitchen. I purchased an Amish made island which just happened to match my cabinets. I would think a competent carpenter could do the same for you.
