Upstairs heat pump: single-stage or two-stage

20 year old, 2 story colonial house.

Main level and basement use a furnace + ac.

The upstairs uses a heat-pump (old single-stage), which now needs replacing.

Floorplan is very open (big open to top foyer and family room).

I am considering going with a two-stage (Trane XR17) heat pump with variable air handler. Contractor thinks that there may not be any advantage over a single-stage (i.e. Trane XR16) for the upstairs unit. But reading online makes me think that there should be? Anyone have experience with similar situation?
