you need to do a general treatment with next watering ..fungicide and meal bugs can both leave a residue that looks like powder. Mites may have also infested so add that to the list when looking for a general treatment. I also suggest adding pumice to the well draining soil. Pumice( lava rock IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE) absorbs excess water and releases it when the soil around it dries along with micro nutrients (minerals) and last using a compost tea during the growing season instead of plain water. Composting for dummies OR Making Yummy Worm Dirt (YMD) 1 storage bin with lid -I suggest the bottom part of container be clear so you can tell how much moisture is in the container. drill holes in lid OR around the upper edge of the bin. if you keep it somewhere it will get rained on fill 1/4 way with soil that has lots of organic matter in it add banana peels, egg shells, old veggies, the skins of potatoes, can even add bread ( add everything except things with oil and meats or mushrooms) stir refuse into the soil or keep a small spade handy to turn the the soil. Add a small spade (like a bulb digging spade not shovel) of dirt every time a bowl is added. Ozone can acts as used as a water purifier in some water treatment plants instead of Chorine and can flash off over time like chlorine can... but you want to get its benefits so use it fast) 1 clean bucket 1 cheese cloth or old pillow case( from experience pillow cases with high thread count are useless here. you want the really cruddy pillow cases. The low thread count allows more filtration) filled and tied off with 3 to 4 cups of yummy worm dirt Add distilled( or lightning water), pillow case (tea bag), and the air hose to bucket ( position hose to bottom bucket under bag plug in motor and let pump go for a full 24 hrs. remove tea bag and empty dirt into a container with refuse and worms wash sack for next use and water cacti and succulents with YMD (compost tea) works on all plants so if you have extra feel free to distribute best to use fresh ---

I love my rope hoya. I've had 2 of them. The first one died shortly after I got it from the dreaded mealy bug. Watering and mealys are the 2 things you have to worry about with this hoya. The only thing I've found that will keep mealys off of compacta is systemic pesticide granules. You just put some in the top layer of soil and it makes the plant poisonous to mealy bugs and other pests. This will make your plant poisonous to people and animals too if they eat it so be careful if you have pets. As to watering I just keep my hoya just a bit more moist than my other plants. I still only water about every 2 weeks. I also keep a pebble tray under it to keep the humidity a little higher around the plant. Here is a link that might be useful: Systemic Pesticide

Hi Marjie, wb! I know it can be hard to take a picture, but it's really hard for us to diagnose your situation without looking at the plant, so you should post one if you are able. First of all, I wouldn't give so much weight to that whole "they don't like change" advice. Every time you change something, your plant needs to adjust. So of course you need to be thoughtful about the changes you make. (Repot in the spring, adjust to higher light gradually, not switch potting medium willy-nilly, etc.) But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of change. Just think of your Hoya like a cat. Most cats don't enjoy big changes (like moving) because they are cautious animals and need time to adapt. But small changes that make life better for them are welcomed, and if the cat is not healthy, then you should change the offending variable immediately! Case in point, your plant is not healthy. Forget about flowering and pot size. If a Hoya drops a few leaves but stops within a week, no big deal. If a Hoya continues to drop leaves week after week, there is a BIG problem because that is not normal Hoya behavior. Hoyas grow leaves slowly, so most species don't drop them casually. 99/100 the problem is the roots are bad. I haven't seen your plant, so I don't know for sure what the problem is. Maybe it has a bad pest infestation or something like that. Check for that first (don't forget the possibility of root mealies). But if you can't detect any pests, then I am thinking you need to re-root it ASAP. Take as many healthy cuttings as possible. Put them in a pot of fresh medium, with at least one node (bump where the leaves grow from) in contact with the soil. Put a clear plastic bag over the whole thing, and put the pot in a spot where it receives only indirect or artificial light. (If you put it in direct light, the mini-greenhouse will get too hot and it will cook.) You can just put the bag over the top and secure it loosely at the base with a rubber band or put the whole pot inside a large bag and zip it closed (blowing fresh air in once a day). Or if you have a clear tupperware or terrarium, I find that works even better (leave the top cracked open). Your plant will grow new roots and all will be well again. Hi puglvr1, Brad! Thank you so much! I'd read that hoyas can take awhile to grow and have been really excited with all the quick growth they've put out. There is room in here for a few more but anywhere there is light in this house is already pretty full of all kinds of plants, no room for cuttings, so I'm going to stick with a few larger hoyas. I've been reading how to identify/confusion between the different hoyas in this forum for awhile. I myself would be totally clueless! This plant was originally mainly green with only a few variegated leaves. Yes, the new leaves are coming in green which I've read have a better chance of blooming when they are green (? true ?) Since I've got limited prime spots in here for big plants that want more sun I'll take the blooms (hopefully someday soon) :D One more question as I'm shifting things to try to figure out where to creatively put them - is a hoya sensitive to being hung in a window that can get cold during the winter? We can easily get below 0 here. I do put up the clear plastic inside and sometimes outside but some plants are still fussy because it is still pretty cool. How much do they hate cool drafts? Thanks!
