I need help with my back yard/garden puddles of water and mud
Comments (10)Those actually look like snap-togther decking tiles (seen here). These are not intended to be set on grade (or bare soil) but rather as a permeable covering for an older deck or patio surface. LIke any wood product they will rot, collect moisture and discolor when in direct contact with the ground. I'd agree with Yard about removing them and then using a more durable surface - it could be concrete as suggested but could just as well be gravel or manufactured pavers, properly set on a prepared level surface....See MoreReally need help transforming this wall leading to the back yard
Comments (5)Thanks! I am starting to think the same thing. Put in a double French door with sidelights centered on the wall and get rid of those windows over the radiators. Wide folding doors were my original vision but cost and radiators made me revise that....See MoreFlooding back yard- need help!
Comments (3)I generally agree with the last sketch of Doug's, that a low retaining wall would be of great benefit, or essential to solving the problem. You'd have to decide how much paving you'd prefer. It could be a landing similar to what you have, a walk or a patio, though the latter is not a requirement to solving the drainage. Mainly, the grade needs to slope downhlll as it travels away from the building. If it simultaneously slopes (at all) toward the path, then you'd better pave the path on account of it's being used as a drainage "conduit." If it slopes away from the path, too, then you just need a landing at the door. Part of the equation depends on how much you use the path and for what. Grass doesn't hold up to heavy traffic ... especially when wet. Make sure the regrading extends far enough away from the house that water will reach the point where it is carried from the yard. It can't be blocked at any point. It looks like your house is high enough from the low ground that this should not be a problem....See Morebig ugly brick wall in back yard? Also need patio space? Comments (7)Yeah, my little guy and our full time jobs have obv pretty much consumed all the hours since he was born not quite 2 years ago. lol...But, the pots I had started pre-him are actually all my gorgeous hostas that are just sprouting and now need homes ;_; The big pots are my hydrangeas that are coming out as well. I didn't want to put any into the ground since I wasn't sure of the plan for our yard. I would like to keep them potted and in our hopefully semi shaded new patio wherever that may be. The weeds on that upper part have been a struggle since day 1. The tree roots sprout new shoots constantly, so weed killer becomes difficult. Not to mention, the roses we had inherited with the property became diseased so we are in the midst of pulling them out as well. Believe it or not, we had a full vegetable garden year before last which is why I was hanging on to the empty pots as we do not have great soil. Long story short, I am looking to have more livilable space that doesn't include more weeding, watering, and gardening in our outrageously hot summers. If I put a patio in the corner between the windows and the retaining wall, what would be the best surface? raised wood type? Gravel ? would gravel hinder drainage and made the ground underneath even more soggy? same issues with brick? Even if I had concrete poured and connected it to the existing patio what kind of drainage solution would we need under and around? These are my beauties from last spring....See MoreJulia_WI Zone 5b
