Lovely blooms on Evelyn! I bet you are enjoying her fragrance! My 3 new Evelyns had one giant bloom fest but now only having a few sporadic blooms. I decided to cut them all back a little to see if I can "reset" their big flush lol.

You've definitely gotten bit by the 'Evelyn Bug'. You will soon start planning where else in your garden to add more Evelyns. On my short list to do is get Evelyn again, but grafted, preferably on a multiflora root stock..a nearly impossible feat. I'm as happy for you as if it was me. I know Evelyn's mesmerizing hold.

BTW, your garden setting is magnificent, with shrubs jutting out of rocks and a big boulder looming overhead. Great.

Wow! I think Evelyn must like it in your garden, Ingrid. That’s an impressive bloom on a young plant. I’m glad you have two Evelyns, all the more for cutting! I’m amazed that you have the willpower to pinch any of her buds, at all. The only rose I’ve ever pinched buds off was Annie Laurie McDowell, and I had a hard time doing it. Evelyn looks wonderful with the blue flowers, penstemon perhaps?

Every picture you post is sheer delight. They are all the sweeter, after last year being so hard. I didn’t realize you had Lavender Mist. It’s a cutie. Those last two pictures show how lush and filled in everything is again. I’m incredibly happy for you! Lisa

Exciting to see a first bloom, and that Evelyn is beautiful. I’m surprised your bunnies eat roses, mine pretty much leave them alone. Or maybe I just have so much weeds and lawn that they'd rather eat. I’m guessing even desert bunnies don’t prefer dine on sea lavender? Yours are all so gorgeous.

I added my Lavender Mist to HMF, although I erroneously put 2018 instead of 2019 and I couldn't see any instructions about how to fix that. I'll add one or two more pictures when the bush has grown a little more.

I wonder whether my first bloom of Evelyn isn't so large because I pinched the other buds. From what I understand that directs more energy to the remaining bloom. I really didn't expect such a large flower right off the bat. It has a fairly strong fragrance, but I'm terrible at describing nuances of scent. Can anyone help me with Evelyn's fragrance?

Unfortunately the rabbits do eat the purple sea lavender flowers, and very often they just cut them off and leave them lying on the ground. They usually get around to them after they've disposed of the more yummy plants first.

Thinking of the fragrance of Evelyn, the David Austin website describes a note of fresh peaches. That seems correct to me, I perceive a blend of Tea Rose and fruit. Souvenir de Claudius Pernet and Mme de Tartas are two of Evelyn's ancestors.

Ingrid, your Evelyn bloom is so beautiful! I love the color variations. Your garden is looking wonderful...everything is so lush, you would never know rabbits had been chewing on anything by looking at those pictures.

I let my Evelyn grow long octopus arms (they are very nice and flexible) because I wanted to try and train it the way Fragrancenutter did. I think she wound it around a wire cage if I remember correctly. I wound mine around a post, and I'm curious to see if it increases the blooms. I have Evelyn is the hottest part of my garden and she was an almost continual bloomer for me last year! (I did feed her with horse manure and 3 doses of Rosetone)

The fragrance of Evelyn is strong and rich, and after I smelled it SdlM did not smell attractive at all. It's certainly more of an old rose smell rather than tea rose, but my powers of differentiation are very poor. Given that this is its first bloom on a small plant, Evelyn is everything I had hoped for. It can only get better as the rose grows and blooms all over, and I imagine even the blooms will become more complex and beautiful. It's now day three from when I saw the bud, and the bloom is paler and more pink, but the petals look just as crisp and fresh as before. My tea roses during the same time period, and also SdlM, look floppy and "tired" and of the roses blooming so far only Aloha looks similar to Evelyn. The two bushes of Evelyn will I think be a great asset to my garden. I'm very happy that I finally have this rose, after admiring the wonderful photos I've seen of it here.

I should edit my comment on fragrance. Now that I think of it, I would describe it as a complex blend of fruit and Old Rose with a note of Tea. The sweet fruity scent predominates.

I have found the fragrance can vary depending on the weather. Some of my roses don't smell as sweet if it's very cold and damp.

Sweet Juliet is half sister to Evelyn, it also has a complex fruit blend fragrance.

Krista, I like your description of Evelyn's fragrance; it seems spot on. It's true here also that scent varies depending on the weather and also the time of day. Most of my roses don't smell as strong or even much at all in the cool of the evening.

Your rose is absolutely beautiful, Ann. Here is my Evelyn's bloom today. I hope that someday it will be as lovely as yours. I'm willing to wait; it is certainly a rose that deserves all the time it needs.

Ingrid, your garden looks better than the old garden as I remember it. I keep going back to the last two pics in the first group you posted above. Your placement of colors and heights couldn't be better. Your Evelyn has an especially old rose look that I know appeals to you. Just beautiful !

We were just fortunate to visit Grace Rose Farm in Santa Ynez Valley. They have a large planting of Evelyn. Ryan, an owner of GRF, noted that David Austin pronounced this rose as ‘Ev-a-line’. Interesting.

She’s so beautiful in both of your pictures! Sylvia, my Evelyn blooms more like Ann’s when the weather is cooler, and/or when the bloom first opens, although I don’t think mine is ever as saturated an apricot as in Ann’s picture. She’s very variable, which I love about her. My Abe Darby does the same thing. Sometimes very apricot, and sometimes very pink.

I just looked at the pictures I took this evening, just as it was getting dark. (I know the Sweet Peas have got to go. The extra rain caused an abundance of self seeding.) The bloom in the lower left corner of the photo is shaded in the afternoon by the plant itself, while the others are more exposed to the sun. Lisa

I've been saying it wrong, too. I pronounce it EVE-lin, as in Crabtree and Evelyn, the British toiletries shop for which this rose was developed; which begs the question, is the correct pronunciation of that company Crabtree and Ev-a-line?

Eve-lyn is correct. That's how the Brits pronounce the name, such as the author, Eve-lyn Waugh. Ingrid, how wonderful to have blooms on Evelyn already. She blooms fast and grows fast, is my experience with this rose. I have no blooms yet, but my Evelyn roses have the largest buds of all my roses. Whether she will bloom first is still a question. Now Diane, don't be so modest - post one of your glorious photos of Evelyn (which I have always pronounced to myself as Ev-e-lynn, but you're right, it is Eve-lynn Waugh. Curious that DA came up with something else again!).

I call it Eve-lynn, and I've not heard it said any other way, but if you want to sound upper middle class 'posh'... we would say Evva-lynn or Eeva-lynn… just to make an impression...

This reminds me of an incident in my college freshman year when a student who obviously had done only the most cursory research delivered a paper on Evelyn Waugh and during the whole presentation of the author described him as "she".

Diane, you are the principal reason I now have Evelyn in my garden (however we may choose to pronounce the name). Your exquisite photos are indelibly engraved in my memory, and I can't thank you enough. I don't know when I've been so excited about a new rose.

The garden is in the throes of a hangover, with browning alyssum everywhere and drooping old rose blooms hanging from the branches. I don't care; it was so worth it. Fingers crossed, a garden helper is supposed to come this afternoon to clear away the alyssum, pull the weeds and spread more mulch. Then I'll deadhead the roses and the garden will be tidy, although not nearly as romantic as the spring extravaganza.

Please tell your roses to hurry up because I'm dying to see other gardens stuffed with blooming roses!

That was so funny, Ingrid, about the student referring to Waugh as a "she". I got corrected early on, so when I took a class in the English novel, I knew not to embarrass myself. I do use the other pronunciation of Evelyn, too, because that's the way everyone else says the word around here. Ingrid, thank you so much for all the kind things you've said about my Evelyn roses. We are so far north, that plants begin somewhat late but speed into full blast rapidly with our long, sunny days. Flowers knows what I am talking about. She's even farther north. Blast the latitude. Crabree and Evelyn is actually an American store, but as it was named after the English botanist I think we can use whatever pronunciation we want! : )

Clair G. Martin in his book "100 English Roses for the American Garden" says, "The name is pronounced EVE-lynn." However you pronounce it, that flower of yours, Ingrid, is just perfect. I'd consider it Evelyn at her best. Mine tend to get damaged by dry wind and thrips.

Lily, I purchased Evelyn from the US Austin nursery in Texas. I don't ordinarily buy grafted roses but I wanted a large bush and thought their roses would take off quickly. It was bought as a bare-root in January, I believe, and has grown nicely and both plants of Evelyn have buds. Here is the bloom again, in its third day as an open flower. The cool, moist weather is no doubt helping the bloom to stay nice-looking for so long, but many other roses are doing less well, so I think it's just a rose for our type of climate, and it should do very well in your new location in Temecula.

on the gardeners world program I’ve heard the rose pronounced as Eve- Lynn. My First bloom has slight fragrance but the blend of apricot/ pink is stunning.

I so agree with Diane, every color of Evelyn is beautiful. noseometer, that second bloom to me is the quintessential Evelyn, and I adore that color which is mostly apricot but with the slightest hint of pink. The bush that had the one pink bloom of Evelyn has had no new growth since then, not to speak of buds, but my second Evelyn has five or six buds that I cannot wait to see burst into flower. It will be interesting to see what the color will be.

I wish my SotR would grow. It is a beautiful bloom but mine just sits there. It must not like it's location.

Both of the roses in the last picture are gorgeous, but location can be critical as the photo demonstrates rather well.
