Can You Help Me Get Rid of this weed...

...in my lawn. It is a very wiry and tuff weed that is spreading all over my lawn here in South Florida. The primary lawn (what there is of it) is St Augustine. I don't know how big it can get, the weed, because it always gets mowed. But it is a tough stringy weed that is hard to pull out. Anybody know of a killer for the weed that will not ruin the lawn? thanks

Whatever you do, don't let it go to seed! RoundUp works great if you want to go that way. Covering it with pieces of heavy carpet, black roofing paper (tar paper) weighted down with rocks, or black plastic or landscape cloth held down with a rock or brick. The Sedge grass (nut grass) will die and compost back into the soil. Just don't let it go to seed. ~ sweetannie4u

Thanks for Weed Dragon advice ! It certainly is a lot of fun to burn the weeds up and it certainly works much faster than Roundup :) I will carefully consider if I want to go this route for 2 reasons: 1. Fire safety, it is very dry here in CO in summer so this might be dengerous to use. 2. Just like Roundup this method is post-emergent control and due to the size of the area to be controlled still going to present with same issue of being time consuming. I've been looking around some other pre-emergent control options and found a product called Preen (available from Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, etc) -- this product is safe to use around trees and provides up to 3 months protection. So I think I will probably end-up with some combination of pre-emergent control (Preen, CGM) + Roundup/Weed Dragon for post emergent control -- even if I can get 50% weed reduction with Preen this will make post-emergent control so much easier. I agree with Kim. You're creating more work for yourself when you have to remove this barrier. Removing it also exposes seeds that may then sprout. If you smother with an organic layer, (which can usually be found for FREE,) you can leave it in place and pierce only when/where you want to plant. Putting gravel in planting beds is something you'll eventually regret. Do you need more effective borders? Thicker mulch? Why do you have a weed problem? Mow with the outflow going away from planting beds, especially if the grass may have set some seeds. If I didn't spend a few minutes per week pulling sprouts and making sure grass isn't infiltrating borders, I would have infestations of several kinds of weeds and grass in a very short time. It really is easier to pull them out often while they're very small and not well-rooted, before they become a problem.

Chickweed, Stellaria media, a cool weather annual weed. Very easily pulled up but do it before it goes to seed!! Also edible if you care to get rid of it that way :-)

The safest herbicide for St Aug is anything with atrazine. Visit the local nursery or box store and look for herbicides with a purple label. Then read the ingredients. Most of the atrazine labels have prominent purple colors. BUT, not all purple labels have atrazine, so read them.

While atrazine is safe(ish) for St Aug, it is not safe at all for animals. Read the directions 3x before you use it. And NOW is the time to use it as opposed to waiting a month. It can take 2-3 weeks before you see the weeds dying.
