Anyone else growing Linum perenne (Blue Flax) in the northeast?

Last year here in Boston in zone 6b, I grew a beautiful Linum perenne, Blue Flax, but after its first year of flowering it didn't make it through a single winter. I loved that plant and am heartbroken so I looked it up on the MBG website to see if I could learn what might have happened. It notes that in clay soils it roots shallowly which affects its winter survivability, but I don't have clay soil.

It also calls the species a "short-lived perennial" -- but if a perennial lives only one year you know there's something wrong.

My soil drains fairly well. We did have some very cold days in January and February without any snow cover, but other plants growing nearby did fine.

I'm curious to know what experiences others have had with this beautiful and floriferous plant with sky-blue flowers.
