Secondary Drain Pan Cracked... Why???

Jerilyn Gomez

I have a fairly new unit which was recently serviced (coil replaced), and after the tech left, we discovered a huge crack in the secondary drain pan, parallel to the unit. Crack looks new/clean. No dust on the actual crack but everywhere else. Supervisor came out to take a look for claims, and says the cause is "oil corrosion" causing the pan to be brittle AND the fact that the unit is resting on joists. He says the "oil leak" is a known model flaw that RUUD is ignoring. Does this sound right? They are the ones who installed it on joists and the techs would have seen this oil in the pan if it were an issue, right? My husband is sure it was not cracked before service.
We've had the unit since 2014, should the pan be cracked so soon from "normal wear and tear"? Is the oil corrosion idea common?
