Help with Small Kitchen Re-do

First, forgive me if this is a duplicate posting. Now the issue. After being in my home for 8 years, I need help making 2 decisions in order to redo the 35 year old kitchen. (I have problems making decisions.) The goals of the remodel are to provide more counter space and storage. (I actually previously reached out to the Houzz community in 2015 but was still not able to make a decision. This post is asking different questions.) I am single and do not need a eat-in kitchen nor an extremely high-end kitchen filled with the latest. While not necessarily a budget remodel, I've got lots of other things I also want to do to the house. I'm not worried about resale value as this will most likely be my last home. Additionally, cooking in a fancy kitchen is not real high on my list. However, I do want new kitchen cabinets.

Plan is to remove micro/oven combo and have a stove. This will help fulfill the need for additional counter space. The trash compactor, which has never been even opened, will not be replaced.

Here are the pictures from the sales listing. The wallpaper and the wine rack above the fridge have been removed. Dependent upon the cost, the soffit may be removed. There is a whole-house sprinkler system that will have to be investigated.

QUESTION #1: The Angled Sink

I am short, and getting shorter, and cannot even reach behind the sink to clean the counter without standing on something. The house faces west and get lots of sunlight in the mornings. Would you remove the corner windows and move the sink to the back wall similar to this space:

QUESTION #2: The Bench Seat

Behind the kitchen table below the double window is the bench seat. As I stated, this is only used to place groceries and other stuff. Whether I move the window to the back wall or keep the sink angled, would you extend the counter like in the picture below in place of the unused bench seat? I would remove the bump out and put the same length windows across counter.

I just want to thank everyone for the help and advice. Dh and I have decided to go ahead with the full re-model. We won't be changing the layout but we are going to replace flooring, cabs and counters. I've decided NOT to use the maple slab from my barn. I'm going with granite all around. I REALLY want to remove the soffits but I took a peek today and there is duct work through out! I'm really having a hard time with this.. just looking at them makes me want to cry. I just don't know what to do to make them blend in. They aren't just typical soffits that are near flush with the cabs.. they come out almost 2 feet from the wall, and 10 inches from the cabinets. They also have some funny angles that might make crown molding around the cabinets look odd? I'm going to post over on the kitchen forums to try to get more feedback on the soffits. Thanks again.. you all helped me with the motivation to for the 'real' makeover!

Thanks! We really struggled with how to keep the original character of the kitchen but make it more functional (the fridge was in the dining room and we had a portable dishwasher!). We kept most of the "bones" in place. The sink is still in the original spot on the inside wall and the window is still framed such that anyone that wanted to put a window the original size back in could easily do so. The one thing we gave up though was the stretch of original cabinets that was under the window. We bartered with a local restoration carpenter and he took the cabinet to use in another remodel and, in turn, installed the new window (including materials). I think it was a good deal. And I'm happy the cabinet is being used in another old house.

Take it down and live with the bare window for awhile to see what you think. You will get a lot more light coming in without a window treatment and I don't think you need one at all since it's not a large space. If you really feel you need something after trying it bare, you could add a simple roman shade mounted on the wall above the window.

Seems you've pondered these options for a bit. I think making the kitchen work for YOU makes a lot of sense at this point. The changes you're proposing make sense and will depend on budget. Does the window even NEED to be closed up for the sink to move? (Don't know just how wide your windows are.) My advice would be to find a local kitchen designer to help you with the layout. Alternatively, if you post a plan with dimensions here people will be able to offer suggestions. Include current pictures. (For whatever reason when clicking on your pics, they don't expand at all.)
