Spring Continues to Unfurl in Alabama (picture heavy)
Comments (22)I hope everyone is getting ready to post pictures of their spring flowers. The tulips the squirrels got into are blooming now and I will take pictures tomorrow. I am very surprised since I did not chill these tulips and they are lovely anyway. Thanks you so much for looking at them. Thanks Jean, your garden is sure to be waking up. And yours Nancy. Rita, I do know you love the Dutch iris too, so I wanted you to know it couldn't be too long. I am surprised that so many tulips are doing so well, but loving it. Kay, Brent and Becky's bulbs have the Come Back tulips. Thank you sharon. Mantis, I am about to break your heart, but while have to fight voles very vigorously, I don't have a fence or deer repellant because I don't have deer. We currently are fighting a raccoon that thinks it lives here now, but no deer, kay...See MoreH. 'Marrakech' - unfurling like a
Comments (9)It is a magic time, Myrle. I have a hard time coming inside because I might miss something. I am falling down tired every afternoon from the heavy physical labor to get the garden reorganized. Yesterday I placed the last of the tree rounds from the rotten pine (tall) stump we had to take down. A whole lot of mulch, but about 8 to 10 big fat rounds now in place with hosta pots on them, or a birdbath. I'm in heaven when I'm in the garden. The effort is every bit worth it. Now I must get on with the bleachers in the south end of the garden. Speaking of Marrakech, it is a pretty gold for sure. I think another one with the frilly leaves like that would be Nancy. It really surprised me this spring to see how gold it was. I expected something plain, but no way. Do you have one of those? And yes, Jo, I know you are pushing me toward Marrakech and it won't take much. I might have to wait for next spring, but it isn't too late to place another order. I just wanted to do right by the ones already here. They are simply superb this spring, and I cannot take my eyes off them. Here is a link that might be useful: Too good to be true...See MoreUnfurling favourite hosta photos
Comments (112)NHL, flattery, schmattery, you don't give yourself enough credit! If only professional photographers entered, what would be the point? I say, GO FOR IT! You won a leaf exhibition! I bet you thought you wouldn't win that (am I right?) ....but you entered anyway. It's up to you, I can't make you (would that I could, lol) but if you keep producing such stunning photos, expect me NOT to stay quiet!!! :-) Isn't it enough encouragement to get kudos from Steve Shaw and LUUK??? Your biggest fan, Jo...See MoreCorn cockle flowers not fully unfurling
Comments (0)I caught the "growing from seed" bug this winter (using lights) and tried my hand at some direct sowing as well. I've determined that my preferred method is definitely indoor sowing due to the greater germination rate. However, I did direct sow some Purple Queen Corn Cockle (AKA Agrostemma Githago) in early spring. They finally began to bloom but several of the flowers never fully unfolded/emerged. The buds stay quite closed and small. I have them in a shaded area...is this why? I even cut some and placed the stems in some water in a sunny spot hoping they would finish blooming...no such luck. I really love the flower though, they are so graceful and dainty. I just love the look of the willowy stems in vase arrangements. Hoping grow a whole lot more of these darlings in the future. I plan on planting the seedlings in the fall and covering them while they winter over. Has anyone had success indoor sowing corn cockle? Have you had success with them in full sun? How do you cut these since they are really just one long stem and the flowers don't all bloom at the same time? I'm in zone 7 by the way, in sandy soil at the Jersey Shore....See MoreStevePA6a
